Just added a drinking straw to my cooling
I just managed to reduce my already low temperatures by a couple of deg C. by propping up the CPU fan on to the vid card with a drinking straw cut to size (SK7 with a big 80mm *2.5cm sanyo denkii fan).
I noticed that I could fractionally move the fan and hsf upwards with my finger with very little pressure. I assume the weight of the fan and heatsink is causing a very minor droop and loss of contact between the HSF and CPU.
Anyway my XP2100 currently at 2236Mhz (11*203) on an 8RDA+ is giving me temps of 31/35.C (idle/load) whereas before it was 33/37.C)this is with a room temp of 20.C and a MB temp of 25.C. I do have case fans which directly duct room air into the CPU fan.
Anyway any of you peeps think this is a common problem with heavy heatsinks/ fans which only use the clips to hold them onto the CPU?

it's probably more common than one would think. That's why i like that the slk-900 is screwed down, not hanging on two clips. Good thinking!

When I went from AX7->SLK900A, I really didn't even worry about any weight or size problems. The AX-7 seems like it was bigger to me. I guess the SLK weighs a bit more as Cu is more dense than Al. How far apart are the weights of those two HS's even? (yes I could probably look that up, but I'm soooo lazy)

The entire base of the SLK-x00's are solid chunks of copper. I'm sure that's pretty heavy

yeah, they are heavy mofo's
i am running sk-7's on my two xp machines which do quite well so far, but i havent pushed it (35-40c under load, crap for case temp as my fan project isnt done yet)
thebove picked up a 900a (the clip mount=the suck)
its heavy enough to crush the pads that they include, and thus his temps went AWOL
he sold it a few weeks ago
considering how heavy these coolers are, and I have witnessed a few broken clips (one to myself gd....) I would think the obvious choice would be to get coolers that use the four post mounts, but I believe those are getting phased out aren't they?

yeah, what he said...
every time i took the heatsink off to reseat it in efforts to get better temps (probably 9-10 times ) there was an abundance of thermal paste at the top of the core, and an utter absence of it at the bottom...only explanation i could come up for this is that the wright of the cooler suspended from the clips was putting excess pressure on the bottom and not enough on the top, thus squeezing all the paste to the top and making a bit of insulation.
i might try a 900u if i come across some money to burn, at least that way i know i'm getting fairly even pressure from it being physically screwed down at all 4 corners

Do you think I can make any money selling straws cut to length?
