What's the difference between WinXP full version and upgrade version?

I want to upgrade from 98SE to XP, but I want to do a clean install. Will XP upgrade version allow me to do this? How about in the future when I want to reformat and reinstall -- will I have to reload 98SE each time then do the upgrade to XP?

The full version is probably what I need, but I don't want to spend $199 for it when upgrade is only $99...

    thanks!

You can do a clean install with an upgrade version. During the install, you will be asked to insert your qualifying OS disk or CD. There is no need to have the old OS actually installed.

But what if I format then try to install? Will I have to install 98 then do a clean install from there?

I'm just wondring because I like to wipe my harddrive and start clean a few times every year.

An upgrade is a full version. You just have to prove to it that you already own a previous copy of Windows. If you do a clean install you'll just have to put your 98 copy in for a second. It doesn't need to 'overlay' on top of an older version.

where are you buying it from?? looks like a retail store. Try www.newegg.com and search for the OEM version. You'll just need to buy some hardware to be able to buy the OEM, small screws are valid
