IMO monochrome photography is the most dramatic.
I used to shoot black & white exclusively with both 35mm and 220 formats.
Now days the cost is just too much even with your own C-41 lab.
A digital camera and decent photo editing software is the best way for aspiring photographers to learn.

I recently picked up an Olympus E510. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E510/E510A.HTM I haven't had much time to play with it yet, but I did fool around with taking some shots of my fish tank. Here's a shot of my red eyed tetras.

If you want quality keep them in the native RAW format. When you go to .jpeg you ALWAYS lose quality. The next format down from RAW would be .tiff. That stays closer to the original shot than a .jpeg would.
