Trying to Build a HD Video Editing PC (64 Bit Vista OS)

So i'm about to upgrade my editing PC. I'm doing a ton of HD editing, and it sucks on my current rig.

So what I want to firgure out is what I should build.

I what to take advantage of the most memory I can (adobe premiere cs4 can use up to 64 gigs I believe), and I also want a good capture card so I can stream live video off of it as well (I stream alot of medical presentations).

So where do I begin?

Look at Supermicro.com workstation system boards. They are high quality hold lots of memory.

You need a server board and Server OS if you run windows. I would also look at using a dedicated video rendering card, the ATI Fire series are well supported. And the off load the compression to a compressor card. As for grabbing video off of cable, you just need a tuner card and again offload the compression to a compressor card.

So i took your advice and I won an ebay auction for a firegl V7300. it lists for about 1100 dollars US, but i got it for 250 bucks. thing is, i can't find a good review of the card, so I'm hoping this is a good card for video editing.

It's a good card, but I might have tried for something with a gig of memory. But hey, the price was right

I'd invest some serious money in a topnotch I/O system if you're willing to spend the money on 64GB of RAM. Use SAS or at least a heavy duty SATA raid controller.

It's a good card, but I might have tried for something with a gig of memory. But hey, the price was right

you know i looked all over adn that was the only good review i could find, but it really doesn't get into how it would handle rendering video on programs like adobe premiere cs3 or 4. i just hope having this card will bring a big increase in rendering frames and playing raw HD footage when editing.

I'm not sure how much assistance you'll get from a workstation graphics card, but it can't hurt. You'd be better off investing in a Matrox RT.X2 capture card:

a server OS is not really necessary. and you are looking for a high end workstation board. not a server board.

Frankly, I would sit tight and wait for Supermicro's X8DAI (or X8DA3 - integrated SAS) motherboard to hit the market so that you can have dual bloomfields instead of dual yorkfields. should make your encoding about 40% faster and you get enough pci-express for your storage controllers and capture devices, plus 96GB of memory that would otherwise be faster than FB DDR2.
