Well a lot of software does that. For example, when I was using Cubase, in order to open the program, you had to plug in a security key (usb dongle) before the program would open.

Google Vice President of Security Eric Grosse and Engineer Mayanl Upadhyay have opened the door to a password-less world, as outlined in their paper to be published in IEEE's Security and Privacy magazine. A few alternatives have been proposed, such as cryptographic cards for USBs, and even a wearable ring.

Not everyone will have that special usb dongle when needed though.

They're right in saying that passwords are inherently insecure. However none of the alternatives I've seen proposed so far are all that much better. Fingerprint scanners do a pretty good job, but can also be manipulated.
