    Tentative new build...any feedback appreciated

    Hello,

Just want to run the build through here to see what you guys think before I order the parts since I hardly keep up with today's tech. Building a new gaming rig and here is what I got lined up within my budget of under $1,500.

    Core I7 3770K
    Asus Z87 Pro
    G.Skill Ripjaws 2x8GB
    Samsung 120GB ssd
    Corsair 750W psu
    EVGA GTX 680

Reusing case, and other parts not mentioned from current PC in my sig.

    Primary use is gaming.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    AMD Phenom 2 X4 : 955 BE
    Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P
    4GB DDR3 Corsair 1333

I would recommend at LEAST a 230GB SSD. I'd also recommend a liquid cooling kit. Otherwise, looks good.

I was thinking to only put apps on the SSD and everything else onto the 1TB HDD I have.

Why would I need liquid cooling? I don't plan/never overclock...I always use stock coolers...

    Thanks

It depends on what games you are installing and how much. Your 120 only gives you 111 USABLE GB (120/1.0738). Windows 7 will take 15GB as a base. Then you have office and any other utilities. Some games take up tons of space. And depending on the number of games... Personally I like to have 200GB. I have a 160GB SSD but use it as my primary for all programs (Windows 7, MS office, productivity, research, data crunching software, 2 games) and I only have 20 gigs left.

In terms of liquid cooling, I use it on my CPU because I found that it keeps my CPU cooler at full throttle than the stock. But if you don't find your CPU going over 65 c, then I guess it's not a big deal..

You're CPU and motherboard choice are not compatible with each other.

Z87 = 4th gen Core motherboard, meaning you need a part with a part number like this i5-4xxx.
    Core i7-3770K = 3rd generation Core CPU.

In other words, the first number in the CPU model number indicates it's generation.

    Code:
    Core CPUs
Model#	Generation	Process	Socket	Chipset	Example CodeName	Notes
    ix-xxx	1 45nm	LGA1156	P55	i5-750 Lynnfield	No 4th digit, 1st gen Core i
    ix-xxx	1 32nm	LGA1156	P55	i5-650 Clarkdale	No 4th digit, Process shrink

    ix-2xxx 2 32nm	LGA1155	P67/Z68	i5-2500K	Sandy Bridge	1st digit 2, 2nd gen Core
    ix-3xxx 3 22nm	LGA1155	Z77	i5-3570K	Ivy Bridge	1st digit 3, 3rd gen Core

    ix-4xxx 4 22nm	LGA1150	Z87	i5-4670K	Haswell 1st digit 4, 4th gen Core
Hope that helps a bit. Other than that, your build looks great. I use stock cooling and have no issues with it.

    Is this good,

    http://www.amazon.com/LGA1155-CrossF...rds=AsRock+z77

    AS Rock LGA1155 DDR3 SATA3 USB3.0 Quad CrossFireX and Quad SLI A GbE ATX Motherboard Z77 EXTREME4

Google says its compatible with that CPU, but I've never heard of Asrock before...

Last time I went with a "non big three" brand (Chaintech), the mobo failed within 3 years.

I'm currently using Asrock in all of my "B" builds. My main system is still Asus, but my HTPC, my wife's PC, and my workstation for work are all AsRock. I like the boards, they are stable and fairly cheap.

    Hello,

Can I ask why are you buying old Ivy cpu ? when we have the Haswell today ?

If you want a good motherboard for gaming , I recommend the Gigabyte Sniper 5 , it has "Killer" Lan , and a Creative sound chip onboard. and the new Haswell Z87 Sniper has them all gold plated . the Sniper is a very good motherboard.

Edit : Dont get the old Z77 chipset, the new Z87 one has extra pair of USb3 , and 6 Sata 3 Ports and all new mobos are adding better onboard sound chip and components....

and dont get one SSD , get 2 SSD in Raid 0 ! it is worth it. best choice is the Samsung 840 pro 128GB.

    here is the Sniper mobo

The main reason is budget. I'm trying to fit everything into a $1,500 budget, (including tax, I am buying from Amazon.com, so I get free shipping but pay tax...on Newegg I would pay tax and shipping, so I go by Amazon prices).
I am getting one SSD because I already have a 1TB drive for all my data and trying to save $.

I actually have another question for you guys, do you think the PSU in my current build can be reused for this one? Is 750W enough or do I need to go for more?

    Thanks.

Your 750W PSU should be powerful enough unless you are going to run qual SLI. I'm running a 750W on my build and I have no issues. Also on your mobo, are you going to run SLI? I'd look at this mobo:

    MSI Z77A-G45 LGA 1155 Intel Z77

It should have what you need and save you a few bucks. Running the GTX 680s on qual SLI may require a higher PSU but if you're running a single card, you should be OK. I plan on getting one for myself in little while so I can run SLI myself....

Here's a side by side specs:

    Oddly enough, I approve....

Seriously, this 3770K on the Asus board is rock solid - a good overclocker. Do get liquid cooling for it, only about $80 these days.

Been looking at the Haswell and AMD offerings too. Any feedback on AMDs FX-8350 CPU? It seems going with the AMD would save me some money, but I've read a bunch of complaints about it overheating. Any experience with that CPU over here?

    Thanks.

The system you first posted is great and more than enough. I'd probably change the 680 for a 770 but thats just me.

And I'm seriously in love with my Z77 MSI motherboard http://us.msi.com/product/mb/Z77-MPOWER.html ASUS is fine but my board cost quite a bit less and the cpu hit 4.5Ghz using the OC button with no sweat.

Edit: and yeah grab a WC unit for it, you won't regret it. I have the H80 and its great.
