Starcraft 2
This may be old news but Starcraft 2 is mostly free to play now.

Awesome.
Yeah! I mentioned that in another thread. If all you want to do is play with friends or play Arcade, you don't need to buy a thing. Let's play!

I don't roll on Shabbos!
How do they monetize? I'm guessing ranked play is pay-for.

Correct. If you want to play on the ranked ladder or if you want to play the single player campaign, you need to buy the game. I think they might also restrict your race selection in multiplayer games; they were going back and forth on that for a while and I'm not sure where they landed on it. Either way, it's a fantastic entry point for people who haven't tried the game yet.

That's a really smart way to do F2P. I really dislike the model where the game is itemized to death and everything costs a bit of money. Like pay-for character slots, bank slots, skill unlocks, extra dungeons, races, etc. Instead of piece mealing the game together with micro transactions, being able to play the majority of the game and then upgrading to the full edition with one purchase if you'd like to compete/play end game is refreshing. It's pretty much the demo model, but you can get a feel for the entire game.

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/buy-now/spawning
I found the page that describes the whole thing. Looks like they do restrict Starter Edition players to Terran-only, but they can also join 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 ladders if grouped up with full version HotS or WoL players; it's only the 1v1 ladder that's restricted. Pretty cool!
EDIT: Okay, I am once again not sure about the race restriction. The Starter Edition download page at https://us.battle.net/account/downlo...c2&starter=sc2 shows "The FREE Starter Edition of StarCraft II gives you access to the first five missions of the Wings of Liberty single-player campaign, all three races and custom games in multiplayer, and the entirety of the Arcade," so the Spawning page might just be outdated.

Great White Shark
Yes this has been awesome. With my 2 boys at ages 7 and 9, PC gaming gets expensive with having to buy 3 copies of everything to play together. They have been having a blast playing SC2 with me using the starter edition.
