    Question 2D AGP , ever see ?

hi, i want to know if anyone has heard of a good AGP card which is 2D only.

the reason is that i have a PC i'd like to jazz up a bit, and i already have a Voodoo2 SLI setup that is perfect for this PCs system speed, and the weirdo motherboard has an AGP slot. so...

rather than spending the $20 or so dollars to get a Voodoo3 or whatever, i would much rather spend $120 for an AGP card which only does 2D, and hook the voodoo2 to it. please don't worry yourself with why.

I've seen a few floating around, but nothing i'd get... for instance, there is one with a Virge chipset, and i believe Matrox makes one, but i personally dislike matrox... not a fan of virge chipset either.

the best case involves finding a 4MB TsengET6100 on an agp card. If anyone has ever heard of such a beast, please let me know of where and possibly who made it. i'd trade a kidney or two...

also, ET6000 would be great, or anything else, for that matter...

if you can think of a 2d ONLY ( no 3d whatsoever, even for screensaving purposes ), please lemmie know.

Whether you like em or not, Matrox makes the best 2D card out there. I had a G200 and V2 SLI, and I still miss it. That combination ran everything. You will be missing 32 bit color and anything above 1024x768 in 3D, but it still is an excellent combination.

hmm, inevitable for this to turn to matrox vs. tseng, it seems.

i will not, for one instant, claim that the matrox(2164-w, still don't have a G200) beats any tseng (ET?000) in a GUI or accellerated environment ( eg; x, w3.1-2000 ) -- it won't.

however, the tseng will take the matrox in both doom and also the higher resolutions of quake I. here're some results from benchmarks i've run ::

    doom 1.9s ( -timedemo demo[123] ):
    avg fps demo1 demo2 demo3

    matrox millenium 77.90 2248 1672 994
    et6100 84.80 2065 1536 913
    et6000 82.98 2110 1570 933
    et4000w32p 78.16 2230 1675 990

quake 1.07 (-nosound -nocdaudio -nojoy )
    avg fps demo 1 demo 1 demo2 demo 2 demo 3 demo 3

    et6100 vga 320x200 39.59 155.1 23.9 23.8 23.3 23.3 30.4 30.4
    et6100 modex 320x200 38.47 159.5 24.6 24.6 24.0 24.0 31.2 31.1
    et6100 vesa 320x200 40.79 150.6 23.1 23.1 22.6 22.6 29.6 29.6
    et6100 vesa 640x480 16.60 368.1 56.9 57.0 57.5 57.5 69.6 69.6
    et6100 vesa 1024x768 8.24 740.5 115.1 115.0 117.3 117.3 137.9 137.9

    et6000 vga 320x200 39.56 155.2 23.9 23.9 23.3 23.3 30.4 30.4
    et6000 modex 320x200 38.31 160.2 24.7 24.7 24.1 24.1 31.3 31.3

    et6000 vesa 640x480 16.60 368.2 57.0 57.0 57.5 57.5 69.6 69.6
    et6000 vesa 1024x768 7.76 786.5 122.2 122.4 126.1 121.6 147.1 147.1

    matrox vga 320x200 39.71 154.6 23.8 23.8 23.2 23.2 30.3 30.3
    matrox modex 320x200 38.51 159.4 24.5 24.5 24 24 31.2 31.2
    matrox vesa 320x200 39.68 154.8 23.8 23.8 23.2 23.2 30.4 30.4
    matrox vesa 640x480 15.25 400.6 62.1 62 62.6 62.7 75.6 75.6
    matrox vesa 1024x768 7.32 833.2 130 129.6 131.9 131.9 154.9 154.9

( plz pardon me if the formatting sux; i'm pasting right outta excel ;; note, the #s for the demo[123] columns are the seconds reported by quake, not frames or anything -- the column after the avg fps is the sum of all seconds ).

matrox in question is the 2164w or whoever.

in mode 13 and modeX, the matrox edges the ET6x00s, but in any vesa mode it loses.

again; i'm not trying to *bash* matrox, they're very good cards for any purpose - and they have far wider support than the tseng family seems to ;; however ;; they are not the best 2d cards for use in MS-DOS.

the reason AN agp version is desired is so that i could have this chipset ( et6100 )'s superior speed in dos while still enjoying the benefit of AGP while in windows or whoever.

it seems that no such card exists, so i'm s.o.l.

if someone has a line on a cheap 4mb G200 matrox, let me know, and i'll be happy to run it against through the same benchmarks to see if it outperforms the et6100.

Ok now you've got to be kidding..

You'll spend $ 120 on a good 2D card? Forget the idea of getting a 2D only card. Waste of money. Look at the Radeon VE (2 monitor support) or Radeon LE - both have excellent 2D/3D support.

    Exclamation

adisharr, i am not kidding. -- the et6100 i finally found was slightly over $100, and it is so far the 2nd best and most enjoyable purchase i've made for a PC.

it is a great thing for the radeon to have dual head support; very few cards seem to have that option and it [radeon] is very priceworthy.

however, the et6100 will beat anything in ATi's family tree in quake I ( non-GL ), or doom, or just about any of the other benchmarks one can throw at the cards in question. the ATis might take the tsengs in a few instances, but overall i anticipate that regardless of the competition, the et6100 is the overall king of the hill for the criteria of ms-dos screen13/mode-x/vesa gfx.

i'm not looking for 3d at all right now - it is not what floats my boat.

thanks for the suggestion tho -- good to know of something other than matrox with dual-head.

Actually there's a lot of companies with dual head. Hercules and Elsa both carry Geforce II MX's with Dual Monitor support, these do cost more though, but OGL is great on them.
