    should i go cisco

Right now I have a linux box set up to handle my NAT and all that trimmings on my gateway. I'm looking to get rid of it and just have a nice router sitting on the floor. I do have a netgear but it just does not let me get to deep in to the configuration of it. I was looking at the cisco 806. I'm looking for one that can do vpn, nat,Ipsec, and all the good stuff. I'm willing to spend up to $500. Anyone have any ideas on routers?

That would probably be the best for the money.

Those routers aren't even made by Cisco. They are a re-branded device of another company; wish I could remember who it was. Until you actually get up into the Catalyst series I don't think you are getting actual Cisco equipment.

Actually I'm postive that Cisco Dosen't make any of there hardware they contract it out. They hire programers to develop the IOS,and new Protocols. And also the catalyst is there switch line.

I don't know of any other routers that do of what you want them to do in you price range, so the 806 is a perfect choice for you. I have never used that exact product But I have configured 2500 and 2600 series routers and with a good reference book it is very easy.

Dohh, you're right. The Catalyst are switches. I spaced that because I am used to the 5000+ series switches that have mdoules capable of handling routing.

However, Cisco owns Catalyst, and the fact that Catalyst made hardware is one of the reasons they picked them up. Some of what is labeled Cisco is completely a 3rd party product. some of what has their name on it is made by other companies, but is designed by them.
