    also using PowerDvd4.0...
i've got this connected directly to the TV via super video cable, the desktop shows on the TV,sound etc...even the PowerDvd splash screen shows up on the TV,but when i launch a DVD i get nothing but a perfectly blank screen,...suggestions?

Does the dvd display on your computer? If so, you need to make the TV the primary display - a movie will only display on one screen at a time.

I used to run an ATI All-in-Wonder card (8mb PRO) and I was able to display on the TV and the monitor at the same time. I don't think that is the problem. **EDIT** Not so sure, thought, cuz this is a laptop.***

How do you have the secondary display setup? If you have extended desktop and try to run in full screen, it is attempting to stretch the image. This will not work.

The seconday display should be set to "clone" or something similar.

    ****EDIT****
I did some searching and found this link ----------> HERE

Sounds like your problem, but I'm not sure if it is the right solution.

how is this against the AUP, he's asking about using tv-out from his laptop.

Like someone else said check your display settings, and try having the second display display the same as the primary display.

I've had this problem a couple times using my ATI 8500 where I'd get a black screen when trying to play a movie in Powerdvd.

I've done this with a laptop (ati mobility) and a Realmagic Hollywood+ decoder and they both worked that way. Its possible that his doesn't though.

Earlier ATI cards only had the ability to clone the display, its only the newer ones which are dual head which can support 2 displays at a time.

However I'm not sure about the mobile range, have you tried playing a video from another source (divx/mpeg/WMV etc) and seeing if that works. Also look for overlay options in the display settings.
If it is dual head you'll be able to set the tv as primary.
