whats the best linux desktop distro

i have used red hat for many years, and i am happy with it. but i have heard that suse and mandrake are better distros for desktop users. mandrake allows you to download iso images for the distro, but suse only offers an FTP install, and quite frankly, im not gonna bother with that, do you guys know where i can find suse iso images?

I personally prefer Gentoo or Slackware--but, it's all personal preference. As far as Suse goes, they don't distribute ISOs--you may be able to find them, but they aren't supposed to exist.

Next to that though I think slackware is the best desktop distro of linux. It's not cluttered with crap like mandrake, its just simple and to the point. IMO Gentoo has a messed up install system, its half a net ftp installation with an iso

I really couldn't be bothered to try it out though.

Do you think your lack of "other has anything do with this?? Gentoo is awesome. If you can figure out slackware you'll have absolutely no problem with gentoo. If you understand the FreeBSD ports tree (which I hope if you're actually using FreeBSD), gentoo makes perfect sense. All gentoo's 13MB ISO does is allow you something to boot and work from. Then, it downloads and compiles everything, just like a port.

I mean, if you don't like it that's one thing. But to come on here and proclaim how "messed up" it is then say you can't be bothered, that is really irritating.

natgun, the only way to obtain the SuSE ISO's are to buy the prepackaged disks.

I like Mandrake 9.0, but I'm still kind of a n00b. Once I get a bit more advanced I'll probably use slackware (something that I'll really need to know linux to use

im a total "noob" (yuck terrible word) and i like mandrake more than redhat or lycoris, the only other two ive used. wots harder about slackware, is it more command line orientated or something?

Yeah I think so. You can't install x-windows w/o entering some comands either. Forgot what they were. BTW, can someone respond to my thread about installing opera?

Its all command-line driven. I don't really think its too hard, but there certainly isn't any "point and click" mentality involved.

Exactly, didn't mean it was TOTALLY comand line driven.
