Getting images from digi cam to pc

Anyone know a good program to do this? I was using the digital camera wizard in xp, but now I use 2k so I don't have that option. And the software that came with my camera (Canon Powershot A10) is crap...

does it show up as another drive like in xp? if it does just copy the pictures from there? or do you want the options that the xp thing gives you?

I just go into the drive that gets created and copy them over

The quickest and easiest way to do it is to use a CompactFlash card reader. Pop the CF card out of the camera and into the reader, and then put the reader into a USB port. Windows will recognize it as a drive in Explorer, and you can just copy the files from there.

You can get similar functionality by plugging the camera into the computer after installing Canon's software, but the reader is so much faster and easier. I normally don't recommend spending any more money than you have to, but it's well worth the $15-$20 to pick one up.

yeah memory card readers are good, thats what i have for mine. it still gives me that message about what i want to do but, i never use the wizard.

Well no drive gets created when I connect the camera... And I don't have much money to spend on a card reader, that's why I was hoping there was a program like there is in XP (which works very well) to let you do this.

The card readers aren't particularly expensive. I just picked up a Compact Flash reader at Best Buy for $20...they had an SD reader for the same price.

Did you install the Canon software? Without that, Windows won't be able to mount the camera.

yes...as mentioned above...when u plug ur camera in...the OS will detect it and it will show up as a HDD...

a card reader is a possibe solution...but if you have a camera and ur using its internal memory, the option with copy and pasting from windows explorer is the best option...it just shows up as another HDD>..

masteraleph: They're $40 Canadian -- too much for me, especially when it worked just fine in XP I don't see why I should have to spend $40 for something that I shouldn't need.

Bootleg: I installed the drivers and all the Canon software. It still doesn't show up as a hard drive. So either I'm doing something wrong (don't see how I could be), or my camera drivers just don't support that feature.

Thanks for the help guys. Maybe I'll pick up one of them card readers when I'm feeling richer.

There's 2 ways:

1. Install the correct Canon drivers. When you plug in the camera, it will show up like a hard drive icon in "My Computer". Then you can just copy and paste the picture files.

2. Install the correct Canon picture transfer program. When you run this program, it will have a button you click on to transfer the pictures to your hard drive.
