    Electrical Genius required

Any reason why I should'nt run a 5 Watt 12 V car light bulb off a molex connector with a switch so I can see what I'm doing when playing inside the comp case?
Have a 460 watt enermax PSU.

PS Mind you I suppose I'll have to fit a fan on it to keep that cool as well.

well if you can find a 12v or 5v bulb it should be fine.

But you have to keep in mind to get that bulb to work you have to have the PSU on and a mobo attached. With most PC maintence you dont want to have a live PSU present, as you can easily damage components (including self).

    So to summerize:

    Can you: Yes

    Should you: no

THanks for the reply- Yes thought of the -"won't be much use unless the PC is running" after I posted, but I do sometimes poke around when the machine is on (checking fans or chip temps)so a little light on the scene should make it safer.

Is there any way to get power from the PSU if the PC is not on? for example from the MB connector- I notice the NIC leds stay on when the PC is off as long as the PSU is still on.

those NIC LEDs are powered by the 5v standby line..

do you mean power the PSU without a motherboard? simple, connect the green wire on the motherboard connector with any black one.. the green is the soft power on, and when it is grounded the PSU thinks the motherboard wants it turned on..

    Korndog- thanks for the reply-
THe PSU is connected to the MB, so I assume if I ground the green wire to the black one , it will turn on the PC as well.

That is of course what I normally do- use a small halogen table lamp- Just that I found a whole set of spare car light bulbs and wondered if it would be possible to use one of them as an internal light for the PC when doing work on it.
