Low-level format
Hey guys,
This might be a dumb question but I was wondering how you do a low-level format.
Thanks

I do it with a tool I got from Power Point.

I need to do a low-level format for my 160GB WD SE hard drive.

For IDE drives, most manufacturers have a utility you can download from their web site. For SCSI drives, your SCSI BIOS normally has a utility to low-level format.
But low-level formatting is almost never needed -- why do you want to?

Are you having this same problem? As far as that goes, I use a debug routine to low level format my drives, but whatever is easiest for you.

In your particular situation, a low level format sure couldn't hurt and may actually fix whatever the root of your problem is. If Western Digital has a low level format utility available for download, it's probably built into their "Data Lifeguard Tools".

It's him on the other board. I don't know why he couldn't just copy and paste here to save the confusion.
Anyways, I just want to point out you can't RMA the drive like those other people have suggested since it doesn't meet the conditions.
WD should have it on their site, I use Maxtor so I don't really know in your case, but Maxtor does provide several utilities for their drives, maybe try one of them?

I did post it here. I only got one response though and I put it on the other forums to see what they would have to say about the problem.
