Lite-On DVD drive question (it rattles?)
Building a pc for a friend and I'm installing the black Lite-On dvd drive (model xj-hd166s for those who care). When I first got it, it seemed to rattle, like something was loose inside it. I installed it anyways, and it worked, as far as reading cds and dvds are concerned.
However, it seemed like before it would begin actually reading the disc, it would just spin the disc in the tray, though I noticed no scratches on any discs. Also after ejecting a disc, with the tray still out, I would hear this spinning noise. I decided this wasn't healthy and rma'd it (newegg).
Just recieved the new one from them, and it too has the same rattle. I've built dozens of computers and never had a cd or dvd drive rattle. I use LiteOn cd burners almost exclusively, never had any problems with them, but this is the first time I'm using their DVD drive. Is this just how they are?
thanks,
Matt

I had similar problem with this DVD drive. It worked as you have described but on one dvd it went on and on. In the end, I went for another make. The burner, however, works fine.

Quality control has been on the decrease on Lite-On DVD drives since Lite-On no longer make and support them. The joint venture with JVC (JLMS) leaves a lot to be desired. While the quality of the burners are still in tact, the Lite-On DVD drives have been mechanically awful lately. Rattling is not normal and is not a goood sign. It may become a bigger problem in the future. I would look to another manufacturer such as Toshiba or Pioneer.

Alright, thanks all for the help. Called up newegg let 'em know the situation and they're giving me a refund. Went ahead and ordered the black Samsung DVD drive... hopefully things go a little bit better.
