What's a good OC'ing goal for 8500LE?
I've downloaded Rage 3D Tweak 3.9 (Very Nice) and Powerstrip.
I have an ATI Radeon 8500LE 64 meg I got from Frys for 79 bucks last January. The card doen't oc well at all. Powerstrip and Rage 3D Tweak both show default memory at 239.75 ?? I thought these cards came at 250 Mhz default? Anyway I oc'ed it to 245/245 (260/260 gave artifacts)
and ran 3DMark2001SE. Here is my score:

7886 Does that blow for this card? Any suggestions?
Thanks,

That's the problem with Radeon 8500LE's. You don't really know what clock speed you'll get. 8500LE's have been made at 230/230, 230/200, 250/250, 250/275, 230/166 and many other variations.
Your score isn't too bad for an 8500LE. It's respectable. What's your system specs?
Some 8500LE's actually overclocked better after a BIOS flash from a retail 8500 card. Here's a link to some 8500 BIOS comparisons: http://www.rage3d.com/articles/8500bios/

My suggestion? Be happy with an inexpensive rig that will run your games fast. Man, you got a lot of bang for the buck! I remember when a 1 meg video card was FAST! I would have died for something as fast as a Radeon 8500LE. It's all relative.

Yup, flash the BIOS. My and old 230/230 newegg white box R8500, would just do 250/250 with powerstrip. Flashed it to 250/250, then it would OC to 275/275, so flashed to the retail and I can get 295/300 out of her. My card has the 3.3ns, or is it 2.8ns RAM, which ever is the fastest they had at the time, 2years ago is when it was purchased.

The card will do 11,000+ with my P4 2.6 GHz running at 2.9GHz on an old SIS MB. Haven't played with it to much since changing processors.

My 8500LE was clocked at 230/230. My core does 290 with zero artifacts with anything I throw at it. The RAM does 258 with an artifact here and there-its more like tearing actually, but whatever it is...its not worth downclocking the card for the very unfrequent ocurrence.
Basically, I got a Retail 8500 with crippled RAM. The Pencil Trick didn't help any on mine. Oh, it came underclocked too, so you mightw want to check on that too.

mine came clocked at 250/250 i believe, and i o/ced it to 310/300 for just over 10 grand 3DMarks (way back when with win98 ). http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5359432
as Marv said, with a faster processor and more tweaking, i don't think 11,000 is unrealistic. i just haven't had the time (or interest frankly) to set it up for benching, though i did a stock bench (250/250) with the barton (o/ced) and got about 9,000 i think it was.
also search the forum, i think i remember talldude had a thread a month or two ago detailing some video tweaks he does before running 3dmark.

My Hercules 8500LE (250/250 stock) isn´t an overclocking monster. The core will probably do about 300 MHz, but the ram craps out at 270 so i never pushed the core further than 290. I almost scored 10K (98xx)with my old palo 1800+@1,7GHz, haven´t even tried to bench with my new processor, but i should get 10K.
Now im just waiting for my 9800SE, and if i can´t get it softmodded to an 9800pro with out artifacts i´ll probably dig deper in my walet for a 9800np or a 9700pro (those cards are still about 100€ more expensive than the 9800SE here in Finland ), then the 3dmark race will be on again
