    Deleting Unwanted Folders?

I've got some folders in my Program Files directory called 'My Way', 'Net Meeting' and 'NewDotNet'. These were probably installed through the use of Kazaa or some other P2P program. When I try to delete them I get a message that says 'Access is Denied, etc, etc'

How can I get rid of them?

Alt, Ctrl, Del and look in your task manager. I bet you have these processes running and that is why it won't let you delete them. Also go to the start menu and use the run command and type in msconfig. This will bring up a box that has lot's of options. Choose the startup tab on this box and unclick anything you don't want to start when you start your computer. I am sure these programs that are associated with those folders will be in the startup section of MSconfig. After you have finished just reboot your computer and none of that stuff will start up and you will be able to delete the folders.

Ranger, thanks for the reply. Under Processes in Task Manager I've got lots of things listed but I'm not sure about a lot of them. Some of the processes are:

    smss.exe
    CCAPP.exe
    hpztsb04.exe
    csrss.exe
    lsass.exe
    svchost.exe
    realsched.exe
    rundll32.exe
    msmsgs.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    CCEVTMGR.EXE
    NAVAPSVE.EXE
    nvsvc32.exe
    vsmon.exe
    MsPMSPSv.exe

There are some others listed also but they appear to be important. I have a sense that most of these should not be running but I just wanted to make sure. Are any of these necessary?

    thanks

Look above at the quote. BTW you can right click on any process in the task manager and choose end process. It will close that process unless it is a program that windows needs to run. It won't let you close something your computer needs.

NewDotNet is spyware. It's an IE plug-in that adds subdomains of 'new.net' to your name resolution system, resulting in what appear to be extra top-level domains (.shop, and so on) being resolvable. It is not overtly harmful in intent, but counts as Unsolicited Commercial Software as it installs behind your back and its purpose is to generate revenue for its manufacturer. A very large range of software installs New.Net, including RealOne, AudioGalaxy, KaZaA, iMesh, Grokster, BearShare, Babylon and Radlight. The new.net software downloads and silently executes arbitrary code from its controlling server, as an update feature.

If you have the variant that installs into Program Files, open the 'NewDotNet' folder in Program Files and run the 'uninstall' program. If this folder does not exist, try opening the Control Panel and looking in the 'Add/Remove Programs' list.

In the case of older versions where NewDotNet is not in the list, you could try installing a new version and then using the uninstall feature. Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware 6 also remove NewDotNet.

Manual removal is a little complex and a botched manual removal can leave you without a network connection.
First you must deregister the Winsock2 Layered Service Provider installed by NewDotNet. LSPFix gives you an interface to this. You should 'remove' the NewDotNet entries and 'keep' the rest.

Next, load regedit and open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID. Delete the keys 4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E and DD521A1D-1F98-11D4-9676-00E018981B9E. For older variants the key will be DD770A75-CE18-11D5-98D8-00E018981B9E instead.

Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Run. Delete the new.net value. Open HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Brow ser Helper Objects and remove the 4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E key. You can also delete the new.net entry in HKLM\Software and the tldctl2 classes in HKCR to clean up if you wish.

Reset the computer and you should be able to delete the NewDotNet folder (new variant) or the newdotnet DLL in the Windows directory (old variant).

My Way is a web portal and search engine like Yahoo!, but without any banners pop-up and spam. Look for the uninstall in Add/Remove Programs.

Net Meeting is a Windows Component and requires uninstallation rather than deletion.
