SB16 DOS Emulation in Windows XP

hey there. I seem to be completely unable to get SB16 emulation to work properly in windows XP, as well as Windows 98/ME. I cannot get any DOS emulation at all. Well, when I try to configure the audio in the Command & Conquer Demo, I select Sound Blaster and it defaults the settings to: Port 220, IRQ 5, DMA 1. Though, when I test the audio, instead of hearing "Testing" I hear "T--t---g---"

When I tried to install windows 98, I was required to disable SB16 emulation all together to simply keep the OS from locking up at startup.

Does anybody out there know how to get SB16 emulation working?

I've tried the default winxp drivers as well as the most current drivers directly from Creative (Damn Corporate Bastards)'s website, neither worked.

Also, If I bought an Audigy 2 Platinum, would there be any DOS drivers for XP, or is playing older DOS based games with working audio on windows XP impossible?...

    aye aye aye!

    Thanks!

in 98 you should be able to change the memory address of the sb16 emulation to something else that wont conflict.

also, if you disable the unused serial ports and perhaps the parallel port youll free up some memory addresses.

hmm, I'll try that. I'm gonna go format my HD and mess around with some bios settings to see if I can get my SB card to work in 98. I'll let you know how it goes.

Im having a similar issue with my Sound Blaster PCI128 under Windows XP. In Windows 98SE, the DOS Sound Blaster 16 emulation worked like a charm, but Ive NEVER gotten it to work ONCE under Windows XP.

And its not that Windows XP simply doesnt support legacy audio...theres a driver setup for it in Harware Manager. It just doesnt work...

Of course, most of the DOS games Ive tried to use under XP have had far more serious issues that sound. I was fortunate to get Dark Forces to work at all...but the sound doesnt work, and neither does the joystick.

I think Microsoft and Creative would rather have us buy new DirectX and OpenGL games and leave DOS in the past. Until they come out with an OpenGL Dark Forces (snowballs chance in Gehena*) Im not giving up on this.

    Angry

alright, I changed some bios settings and got windows 98 to work with my SB Live! Platinum 5.1 on my new mobo. Alas, I'm getting NO dos sound support in C&C1 or Tomb Raider 1. When I go to auto detect, it detects no audio, even though SB16 emulation is working. I also tried cold from DOS on a win98 HD, with the autoexec line for the audio, still nothing. Anybody else hate hardware/software conflicts??

The only problem I had with sb16 emulation in win98se was like LordOPain stated was it conflicting with something else, which in my case was my modem. I changed its IRQ address and it worked fine.

well, I have no conflicts whatsoever, and I have a bios setting which dedicated IRQ5 to only the SB16 emu, I'm not using a printer, so no ltp port conflict. Yet, for some reason, it's not being detected. Odd though, when the autoexec runs in dos/98 startup it says that the audio is at IRQ7, which is the irq for my actual sound card. Does that matter? I wouldn't think so. Anyway, I am totally clueless as to why the hell the drivers aren't working. They worked fine on my old Abit KT7A and now for some reason crap.

Heres something that may work (if you havent tried it already). Try running the DOS program directly in Windows. Dont boot to DOS or restart in MS-DOS mode. Just fire up a command prompt in Windows and try to set the sound up from there. Thats always seems to work better for me. And now that computers are so much faster, poor perfomace is no longer an issue for such games either.

hmm, alright, I tried that, still doesn't work. This is a very strange problem. There are no conflicts whatsoever within windows and everything is configured properly, yet when I try to play a game, like Doom, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein 3D, etc. There's NO audio available, At All. Could that have something to do with the fact that this motherboard has integrated audio? Thanks!

Do you have it setup for digital output, if so change it to analog.
