Folding Crusade: The Greatest CPU Test

    steps into character

OC Crusaders mount up. The time has come to put on your armor, mount your steed and draw your sword. We are going to war. For quite some time we have lived under the false perception that we were at peace. When, unbeknownst to us, all the while our enemy was gathering strength. He has now a power so great that his ability to cause death and suffering is greater than ever imagined. No longer will we allow our enemy to go unchallenged.
The marshalling of our forces has already begun. Our first battalion right now marches towards our enemy here. However, they will need reinforcement if we are to defeat him. I call upon ever Knight and Crusader to join us now. Even that may not be enough, we need to recruit more soliders and Crusaders who will fight to defeat our enemy.
This is the Final Crusade, for it will be a long one. Our all combined strength must go towards overthrowing his malice and cruelty. Only together can we hope to defeat him. Go now, Conquer On.

    steps out of character

Theatrics aside this truly is the most significant post I believe I have ever typed here in SF. Folding@Home is a project whose end result will be the cure for countless diseases. What I have always loved about SF is our people. We have such very good people here. It is because we have such noble members that I feel confident in this endeavor. Also as a way of attracting members to the Folding Team we are awarding a custom avatar to be earned by a member of the Folding Team details here. This is our chance as a Forum community to do something very positive, very public on a global scale. Please Join Us.

    ROFLOL!!!

    I can't help it

I wish I can support the folding team, but I'm not one of those who leaves their computers on 24/7

    Good luck!

You can help, by just running it for the amount of time you have it on. I was doing it that way, before I went 24/7 and I believe some others are doing it that way too.

I am truely sorry for hijacking the thread.

My question is, does folding slow down internet browsing?... What if I run it while I'm playing BF1942?

    thanks!

As far as my experiance with it, it does not interfer with my browsing or my game playing, of course I don`t know about BF1942, I`m playing NWN right now. Edit to add: sorry sapasion, if this is OT, just trying to recruit anonther folder.

Its OK lightbulb would be an awesome recurit even if only part time. If you get the GUI client you can pause it for games if you desire. In my experience Net browsing is unaffected. Some games see more of a lag than others. For instance, I can play Madden and Call of Duty while the client runs. But Grand Prix 4 stutters. Now if I am going to play a serious game session I will likely pause the client to maximize gaming performance. But the client is supposed to use only the unused cpu cycles.

I've been running it on my comp whenever I haven't been gaming. I notice no difference at all while browsing the web, some really intense DB pages slow down slightly, other than that nothing else feels affected. I played America's Army about 30 minutes ago and forgot to pause it before I started playing. I didn't notice it was running until I got into a heavy firefight and it froze for a second or two (and the Unreal engine is pretty CPU intensive).

The program only uses idle CPU cycles, plus you can cap the amount of CPU usage in the advaced options (just in case you dont want your rig running at 100% 24/7).

I have my computers on 24/7 but they certainly are not running 100% cpu load the whole time. What kind of affect would that have on an electrical bill? Non, slight, or like over 20 bucks.

If your pc is already on 24/7 I'd guess folding will barely make a dent in your bill a few dollars a month at most.

Hey saps, I have it running right now, how do I join the team, and have it record how long ive had it going etc? Thanks. I know a lot of guys are signed up already but I don't know what I need to do to join and have my stats go online automatically. I have it set to join team 34149, is that all I need to do?

Just change your team to 34149 and that should do it.. But whatever you folded before you changed teams will not move over...

Yeah as Colossus mentioned previous stats stay where they were if you were folding for another team. But 34149 should be all you need to join us. Be sure to add -advmethods to your target line. Nice little FAQ here

Alright, I added that to my desktop shortcut and rebooted folding, and I have it set to join the sharky team so will my stats go online automatically?
