    Post ATA-100 Cable?

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but is there actually a difference between the cables you use to connect HDs to Motherboards? How can I tell what kind of cable I have?

Physically, there is a difference between ATA33 and ATA66/100 cables. ATA33 cables are 40-pin, ATA66/100 are 80-pin. You could count the pins I guess, but if you've seen the two side by side it's pretty easy to tell which is which. 40-pin cables have relatively thick ridges, 80-pin cables have thinner ridges.
