Is it worth overclocking?

Hey everyone i know o/c is for enthusiasts and such but i am one also and i WANT TO but then again if i fry a 1.2ghz chip than my dad will friggin kill me. So should i do it anyway? I'm getting a wbk38 hsf and 2 80mm case fans, 1 fan blowing at pci slots, the one thats coming the with vid card, and MAYBE 1 more fan....you think i should give it a try......is there that big of a risk if i do it gradually to the point of lockup?

ALSO where do you mess around with voltages...on the motherboard>? and if you up the voltage isnt that more dangerous...............?>?????

I say you do not need to overclock a 1.2 ghz cpu. Just treat is to a silverado hsf and be happy about all the fps power you have.

well, i guess if you've got the fastest chip in the market (say the 1.33 t-bird) and want to go faster (say for gaming), then it would make sense to over clock, though only after increasing your ram and all that, i guess (since you're being extra cautious).
the silverado is great.

I warn you Seabass, overclocking is addictive. It`s always a challenge to see how much that little extra you can get from your computer. I have been through this phase and may I say that it was fun , but I also screwed up a few times, resulting in either a BIOS problem,and one instance, a kaput CPU. My advice is if your Dad is going to friggin kill you if you screw up the system then leave it alone. I personally think that a 1.2 GHz chip cant be overclocked too much, maybe to 1.5 MGz with excellent cooling.

You really cannot fry a chip unless you go all out, or get addicted. I say, set a goal of 1.33 Ghz and try to get to that. Once you get that, and I'm sure you will, STOP! all you have to do is set the FSB in your bios setup a little higher. Go ONE STEP AT A TIME. If there are stability problems at any point, simply increase the Vcore by the least amount possible, usually .05V. also, when you are in bios, there is a hardware monitor, check and see your temperatures. If they are getting close to 50C I would stop right there. With proper cooling and an overall great system, Mr.White (If you visit OC forum at all you know him) runs his T-bird at a whopping 1.62Ghz. He is still the champion of the OC'ers. Anyways, anyone with a decent PSU, mobo and an AXIA t-bird with a good cooler will get to 1.4Ghz at the very least.

I'd say leave it alone for now. Maybe when it's starting to get a little slow try to overclock it.

Most motherboards allow a Vcore setting in the BIOS, usually under a section, "CPU Settings."

What are your tempretures at the moment? If they're high intially (50-60c) then I don't recommend overclocking. However, if they're in the region of 35-50 or so, then go ahead. Another thing, if you want safe overclocking, you could just overclock without changing any voltage settings. This won't produce such good results though.

Don't worry to much if your PC doesn't turn on after a strenous O/C. Just clear your BIOS and try lower settings. Don't expect your PC to be visibly faster. The only speed increase that you'll be getting is in synthetic benchmarks, like Sisoft Sandra and 3D Mark 200x.

flammen is right, just overclock it when you feel its getting slow. and overclock to a nice stable speed.

well i would say overlock when u need it and when it will really make a difference.

i'm not gonna try overlclocking till i do my next upgrade this summer, when ill have a new video card. cause until then, i'm not gonna notice a huge difference with this voodoo 3. maybe then ill get a badder hsf and oc it. right now, i'm going to enjoy the peace and quiet of a stock hsf.

Don't overclock because 1.2GHZ is plenty of power for even the most demanding games. It is not worth the risk.

If he has a good hsf than there is no risk.

All you gotta do is first unlock ur cpu. All you do is write with a pencil a thin line on all 4 of the L1 bridges.

Very simply process, many sites show u how it's done, some over do it and make a 3 page thing out of it when really it's not much...

Second go into the bios and set ur fsb a little higher. I'd say go up to 110 first than go by 1's. Then lower ur mutipleyer (spelling?, oh well..) some (ex. 7x100=700 go 5x100=500). This lowers the cpu speed.

Once that is done go back into the bios and up the fbs even higher. If you have a class c athlon than you'd start at 133 and work urself up from there.

If your mobo lets u do ur ram seprately I'd try that first and c how far it can go up. Then try 2 get the fsb 2 that point.
