Optimal EAX settings for Audigy 2: Advice sought

The EAX option is greyed out in my CHAOS THEORY mp beta sound menu but because I know that other players are using EAX I took a look at my SoundBlaster Audigy 2 control panel and found EAX to be (I think) not activated. There is a dizzying array of EAX options in this panel so I'd appreciate some guidance in machete-ing my way through the thicket here.

One more thing; is it safe to assume that EAX would degrade game performance? It did on my previous PC.

I have a relatively high-end system, details here:

P4 2.8 GHz
1 GB RAM
Win XP Pro
Ati Radeon 9800
Audigy 2

All drivers are up to date.

What are your speaker setting set to? Eg. 4.1
Have you tried the latest drivers? (not DRM ones)

You don't have to enable EAX in the EAX console if the game supports EAX. It should automatically work.

- Last night I looked at the SB drivers list and I appear to be up to date as the only drivers that post-date my current one are the DRMs, which I did not install as I have no clue as to what they do...

- I'm not at home right now but I'm pretty sure that some kind of "master" check-box on the EAX page of the SB console is unchecked and I wanted to post an enquiry here before I went ahead and fiddled with these settings.
