Red face Problem with liteon 16x

ok...my friend has a 16x10x40x lite-on cdrw drive from newegg.com (got it a while ago)

    he's running windows me

if we turn DMA on in the device manager, the burner freezes half way through the burn, even on test burns (we tried many different brands and speeds of media too)

if we keep DMA off for the cdrw, it burns fine, but slowly...16x should be around 5 minutes, right? usually it takes almost 10 minutes for 650-700 megs

i think it is pausing every once in a while (and the burn proof is saving it), but i'm not sure...what do you guys think we should do?

fyi, dma is on for the hard drive (20 gb 60gxp)

    thanks

Are all other programs still running? It also might be a cd burner software problem. Might want to get a new one.

    Lightbulb

best thing i can suggest(to see if it's the burner itself) is put it on its own ide channel, detatch your other cd-rom, just make it the hard drive on ide channel 1 primary, and the cd-r on channel 2 primary. make sure to check the jumpers on the back of the drives, then reformat, and install a fresh winME or partition a drive, and hide your current partition, then install ME(you can go back and delete it when testing is done)
also, what software are you using?

i dont really think it's the cd-r that's the problem though. it could be some irq conflict or some program like a virus scanner running in the background. but if you do what i mentioned, i'm sure you'll know if it's a windows problem(ie software) or if it's your burner(hardware problem)

btw, you dont need an 80 pin connector 40 pin standard ide connector works just fine for all non-scsi cd drives.

i dont get why the pioneer 106-s/116 has ata/66. it's useless.

the burner is on its own channel (master on the second channel)

we are using roxio easy cd creator 5 platinum...we'll give nero a try

would the problem be related to DMA? if dma is on the whole computer just locks up in the middle of burning...if its off the burn is slow but it works eventually
