Memory Test Program
I have a new HP Pavillion dv6000 Laptop with Vista Home Premium . I have had some problems and posted this at
http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthre...4&goto=newpost
Many people have suggested that this is a memory problem . I ran the MicroSoft Memory diagnostic from HP Recovery Manager for my Vista here . I believe it runs this from the BIOS with a reboot . It gave no errors . Does this mean memory is OK or is that test not sufficient . If not , does there exist a test which can check reliably for this ?

Try MemTest just in case.
Edit: How is your power management set up? Also check to see what you are running at start up. These could cause sluggish performance.

Thanks hongsc . I have removed just about all apps ( except Norton ) from startup - still have problems . Power Management - firstly , I work only from an electric connection not battery , and was told by the seller , in this case , I should leave the battery out , as it will keep on overcharging , and be bad for battery and PC . What do you think on that ? secondly , I have in Power Management set as HP Recommended . Other available are Power Saver and High Performance . What do you think ?

I would uninstall Norton and try AVG instead. Also try setting it to High Performance since you're plugged in. It should be fine without the battery and the overcharging thing isn't a problem. Does this have integrated graphics or is it discrete? You can also try to defrag your HDD. Other things you can do is turn off Aero but you shouldn't need to. I would also give Task Manager a look *ctrl+shift+esc* to see if everything is fine.

It is Norton Internet Security , which I know is heavy , but would have still imagined that this new T7100 Santa Rosa chipset of Intel could handle it easily . I was planning to replace it at the end of the free 90 days I have on it . The graphics is Intel's new integrated Mobile 965 Express Chipset with GMA X3100 adaptor . I also thought that this should be sufficient for anything except gaming . I'll set the Power High performance and see what happens . Again I would still have imagined that this notebook could handle all of this quite easily . Thanks .

Well hongsc , firstly I owe you a big thankyou . By setting the Power Management to High performance , there appears to be a big improvement ( though still not perfect ) . I take it from this that the Power Management actually affects the constant operation , and not only hibernate , sleep and the like . Something like a desktop with a too small power supply ? Is this in fact , the case ? If so , has the extra 1GB memory required more power ? Does this mean that the sticks are faulty in demanding too much power , or possibly , this is not normal for a laptop , and it itself has some inherent problem . With your permission , I will put this question into the mobile department , to hear what others have to say on this , too . Again , thanks for the direction - noone else suggested it .

Well the Santa Rosa platform should be able to take 4GB with no problems. Have you checked the temp with this? And it's probably not a good idea to cross post unless the questions are different.
