Linus' Reply to Mundie
http://web.siliconvalley.com/content...g/torvalds.htm
For whatever it is worth (and it probably isn't worth much), Linus has replied in typical style to Microsoft's Statements from Mundie. I think that an Apple must have hit Linus on his head before he wrote this, but his arguement does make some sense.
I think my favorite comment is the end:
"I'd rather listen to Newton than to Mundie. He may have been dead for almost three hundred years, but despite that he stinks up the room less."
Certainly nobody would deny that Linus's comments are usually fairly blunt....

Q: How many UGA students does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Two, one to call a friend at GT and another to follow the directions.

I think its really strange that such a brilliant programmer with a intelligent mind would resort to such low brow attacks. Social skills anyone? Although i suppose you could make the point that MS simply practices 'professional' and 'high brow' namecalling, based on their recent press release. :-)

Linus says some funny stuff when he talks. Although I do have to agree with what he says.

Naah nothing low about Linus's comments. In fact I agree with them very much. I mean we're talking about a company that charges $200 for crap software called windows 98.
In my opinion the only real reason that Microsoft issued such a statement is that Linux is one of the few real enemies that it has in OS market. And as the kernel improves, distributions get more user friendly, and more software and drivers get released Linux is steadily getting more and more of a foothold in the OS market.
I think Linus knows this although he didn't mention it in his letter. It'll be quite interesting to see what Linux will be like two or three years from now.

As much as I think Linus probably should use more tact when he comments about things like this it is refreshing to see somebody being honest and not having to spend a week with the lawyers before releasing a statement. His comments won't win him any battles against MS but most people would probably rather read the stuff he rights then the ambiguous crap that people like Mundie spout out.

As you said, these coments won't win any battles, but they are still fun to read. I think Linus meant to be funnny first and foremost, and point out that the ones preaching have no right to preach.
