Can we use Linux to play PC games?
I'm new to this whole Linux-Wave...
But improtant things 'first'...
(like games!!!)
Diablo2, Tribes2, Quake3, Counter-Strike
are they playable in Linux?
if so, do they run slower than Windows?
Thnx

2300mhz @ 1.75v (200 X 11.5)
2400mhz @ 1.95v (200 X 12.0)
Going higher than 2400mhz is near impossible with air cooling.

Quake 3 has a linux native port, that depending on your kernel and video card can either run close to windows speed (somebody did a benchmark with the new 2.4 kernel and linux was faster than 2k at a couple of resolutions) or much slower (if you have a non NVidia card). Some people have said there will be a linux native port of tribes 2 out around the same time as the windows version.
You *might* be able to get Diablo2 to run acceptably through wine---the linux windows emulator. Its not a very processor intensive game (i.e. my P3-866 with a Geforce DDR runs it not much faster than my parents Celery II-566 with onboard i740 video). Some people have reportedly even got Star Trek Voyager Elite Force to run acceptably through wine---though i dont see how that would be possible on less than a Athlon 1+ ghz or P4, or maybe a dual processor system (does wine utilize two processors?)
The simple answer to your question is, yes, linux is viable for casual gaming only if you have a Nvidia card. Other 3d cards' linux drivers are not very developed. The best solution is to dual boot 98 and linux.

Quake 3 and Tribes2 have native-linux versions. All they require is to have your 3D stuff implemented correctly. I have HL and CS working just great on my system, but some people have trouble getting them to work. Diablo2 I have never tried but I doubt it will work until the DirectX libraries become more stable. Supposively you aren't going to be able to see much of a difference in Tribes2 in Linux or Windows. In Q3 I actually get better frame rates but my system is highly tweaked.... As for HL and CS, there is speed loss due to un-mature wine code, but the games are very playable on my system.

here's the url for CS in Linux. http://lhl.linuxgames.com It uses WINE. Supposedly you lose a few fps because WINE isn't perfect.

RIGHT! - win4lin - This is what I'm wondering about! How good is it? anyone here tried to use it with office or new directx games. All the stuff one emulators say win4lin is by far the best - but the reviews do not give examples! - like how many apps work under it. I've read that windows apps run at native (or close to it) speed. Its as fast as W.I.N.E. and alot faster than vmware. Cost is 83? bucks and version 3 is due out soon ----- these guys look really good to me!! can't rem. URL, but try google. Check them out .
