Here's the link where the computer formats refresh rate was found. It's a 42' phillips

it just means the resolution and refresh rate. similar to a regular monitor.

that hdtv seems like it can handle full 1080p (1920x1080) . just get a HDMI-> dvi adapter to run the hdtv with the DVI out on your video card.

Hey guys, I was looking for an answer. I used google and found these forums. Which is great. Hence, why I registered.

I am a PC gamer. I am building a PC in few weeks. However, I need a new monitor as well. BUT, I have a PS3 and I thought, I would get a HDTV rather than monitor. So, I can use both.

But, I have noticed that none of the HDTV below 37" support 1080p. Only 720p, which isn't really good for my new PC. The graphics card will be 8800GTX.

Would you guys let me know, if you recommend me getting a HDTV to use as a PC monitor to PLAY GAMES. I can surf the internet on my 17" monitor.

I have another question. If I connect it to my PC. Will I be able to use different resolutions. Say 1280x1024.

This what I am thinking to get

Yea, you can use a different resolution, but you may have to play around with your display settings to get the picture to not look distorted or cropped.

As for using an HDTV monitor for games, I'd say go for it if you have the space/setup for it. It would also double as your tv, assuming you don't already have one.

Alright, well, I am sure my new PC will be able to handle it, but I am not too bothered about using the 1080p, as this resolution will be mainly for the blu ray movies.

Do you have any idea of the connection that I need? I am sure it has VGA connection. But, can I use HDMI cable?

    Thanx

Depends, I don't think any newly released hdtv have DVI input, but they should have RGB and HDMI. Assuming the video card has DVI output you'll probably need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter to connect to the HDTV, or you can buy a DVI-HDMI cable.

    1. Get a copy of PowerStrip,
    2. Use the somewhat 'hidden' "Resolution Designer" feature to achive 1:1 pixel mapping if you can't get it with a stock resolution (and you probably won't),
    3. Enjoy 1080p material right from your computer as other than those overpriced HD/BlueRay DVD players and some video game, that is the only source for 1080p available at present.
Keep free, over the air television alive. Wireless services occupy enough spectrum already, they don't need any more. Free, OTA TV is what makes this country unique.

I just got a westinghouse LVM-42w2 42" monitor. I had 2, 21" Viewsonic monitors and felt one 42" would be better. Not so much :-( My system is a 3.6mhz P, 2 gig ram, ASUS RADEON 256mb X800/X850 PRO video card. Using the DVI cable, I can't get the resolution past 800x600. Using a VGA cable, I can get it to the max of my card which is 1920x1080. I'm a web designer and this resolution is still not good enough. Everything is too big! I guess bigger is better only when it comes to boobies :-P

My question is... The monitor says it's 1920x1080. If I buy a new video card that supports 2560x1600, will I be able to use this resolution with this monitor or will it not switch to this res? My old viewsonic 21" says it supports 1360x1024, but I could switch it to 1920x1080 and it looked fine.

Hmm... I don't know why/how your old 21" CRT ran at that high of a res... but I bet that was orig. the max res support. But yeah, getting a new video card won't help you run your monitor at 2560x1600.

One of my friends bought a Samsung 46" 1080p. Not sure the exact model. He had his desktop with X1800XL hooked up to it with a VGA cable. He obviously wasn't running native res. I took him to Radio Shack, and we picked up a DVI to HDMI cable. Now, it'll run 1920x1080, but it shrinks the image to have a ~1" border on all sides, and isn't at native since it's shrunken. When I turned it down to 1770?x1000, it had the same borders, but seemed to sync up with the native res, as the text was extremely sharp. I'm sorta stumped.

With the VGA cable, we had been able to find on option on the TV's menu to auto-adjust the screen size to fit properly. With the HDMI cable, we couldn't find that option anywhere. The computer also didn't seem to want to cough up the manual screen size adjustments in ATi Tray Tools.

I'm all ears for any suggestions.

Oh ya, there also some strange blue horizontal lines flickering in and out here and there with the new cable. It was fairly minor, but still very obvious. They had the feel of analog interference, but I don't know what caused them. They weren't present with the VGA cable, the XBOX 360, or the TV box. The computer was plugged into a port we'd already used with no problems.

So is there any known solution? Would a newer video card possibly help?

Is it possible to run a video card at 1920x1080 @120hz
    (dot-by-dot) directly to a 120hz lcd tv?

Do all 120hz LCD TVs 'interpolate' the intermediate frames (like the Sammys)?

I don't know what kind of HDTV or video card you have... but there are two possible reasons for this:

    1) Your video card settings are set to Scale the image. If you have an nVidia card, go to the nVidia Control Panel. On the bottom-left should be a section called "HDTV Scaling". Turn that off if it is on.

If you have an ATI card, you'll need to do some research to find the equivalent function.

    2) Your HDTV is doing the scaling. Do a search online for your HDTV's model number and the words "dot by dot" or "scaling". When I hooked up my HDTV for the first time, it down-scaled a 1920x1080 signal (1080p) so that there were black borders around the image. When I set it to Dot By Dot, it gave me pixel-perfect native res.
