    Finally upgrading, thoughts?

End of this month I'm putting my new computer together, I've been ordering parts here and there since September. I'll probably be selling my current tower after I finish building my new one if anyone is interested (and maybe I'll part it out).

    Build -

    i7 860
    Coolermaster V10
    Coolermaster Storm Scout
    Gigabyte P55-UD4P
    8GB GSkill Ripjaw DDR3-2000
    XFX 5850HD
Patriot Torqx 128GB SSD (OS, EQ2, couple other things)
    WD Velociraptor 300GB (Games)
    Seagate 1TB (Everything else)
    X-Fi Fatality
    LG 22x DVD burner
    Logitech G19
    Coolermaster Storm Sentinel Mouse
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
    Antec TrueNewBlue 750w

I'm hoping to get 4.2Ghz (21x200) running my ram with the x10 multi. I may add another 5850 for CF later but I want to wait and see what Nvidia releases at which point I may sell the 5850 outright and go with Nvidia.

    Thoughts?

i think a noctua NH-U12P SE2 or TRUE or Prolimatech mega shadow with dual 120mm fans will provide similar performance without the obtuse power consumption of the thermoelectric V10. the 70w peltier unit, at 15 cents per kilowatt-hour, will cost you about $80 a year to run.

RAM speed and cooling performance will not be the determining factors that get you to 4.2 GHz. Most i7 860's top out right around 3.9-4.0 GHz due to the feeble PCIe controller. An i7 920 D0 is your best bet for 4.2 GHz and I think with the money you save on the heatsink you'd be better off investing in that.

On the other hand, I'd rather have the cheaper/better integrated platform and just be happy with 4 GHz at 1.35 than 4.2 at 1.45 or whatever it takes. I've only seen a few 860's do 4.2 GHz and it was at 1.4v or higher. Not sure if I would run that 24/7. I'd rather have 3.9-4.0 than have spent an extra $100 on a motherboard/RAM simply to agonize over 200MHz or less.

Congratulations on the 5850. I'm sure it's only temporary.

Ya, but I got the V10 for free as part of the marketing survey stuff I do for CM (they're local to me).

I wouldn't have bought it but since I have it I'm going to use it. I'm fairly sure had I bought a heatsink I would've went the Corsair H50 route or something.

As for 4.2Ghz, that's just what I'm shooting for, I'd have no problem with 4Ghz.

As for the 920 vs 860 thing, I just wanted the newer tech. I know both are good CPUs and I realize the 920 gets the nod in overclocking.

    Thx for the input

well, the V10 still performs great without the peltier plugged in. be sure you have the 1156 mounting hardware for it.

Build went really well, though I settled for 3.8Ghz 24/7 overclock because 4Ghz needs 1.4vcore vs 1.3vcore for 3.8Ghz, I didn't think the 200mhz was worth the extra heat.

I also went with an 80GB G2 instead of the Torqx due to price/availability issues.

Now I'm thinking I may get some JVC RX900 headphones or something, since my current Razer headset is about a year old.
