    Purpose?

    What is a docking station used for?Or is it replicator?

    They've evolved into the same thing.
    In the early days a docking station had slots for add-on cards.
    That said some replicators add ports that are otherwise not available.

    Ok thanks.I found a Toshiba laptop in woking condition and it came with one of those,attached.Took some doing but I finally took it off.

    Yes. Think of it as a quick-disconnect port replicator. You can plug in all of the peripherals you want to use while your notebook is on your desk (mouse, monitor, keyboard, printer, network, etc). The docking station allows you to disconnect all of them with a single button (the "Eject" button), or re-connect all of them by just docking your laptop.

    It's mostly a convenience thing. Some of them also have additional ports you don't find on your laptop (gigabit ethernet, DVI connection, parallel port, etc), but it's mostly for convenience.
