Need good computer speakers
I would like to know what, 5.1 or 7.1 speakers would be best for gaming. Its ok to mix and match them if they are better that way. Thanks in advance.

There is no one blanket answer.
The answer depends on a few factors:
1) What is your price range?
2) How much do you care about sound quality outside of gaming (e.g. movies and music)?
3) If you do care about sound quality, what is your priority of sound quality vs surround sound? An easy test is to ask yourself - What would you rather have? High-quality 2-speaker stereo sound, or mediocre sound-quality surround sound?

There are -no- speakers designed for PC use that are actually good and come in 5.1/7.1 configurations. They are all cheap and sound terrible. Axiom makes a nice 2.1 setup, though.

Well, in all fairness, your opinion seems to be based on the foundation that sound quality is of the utmost importance. I also tend to agree with you, but I also realize that the criteria I use to drive purchasing decisions is not the same for everyone... hence the reason that I think we should learn more about what Lonewolfroger cares about, before we give recommendations.

Yes, they do. It also costs $300+. I would gladly drop that kind of cash on good audio hardware (my Swans cost $200 when I got them). But not everyone would.

... but that's assuming he can afford $400. Once again, I think we need more info before we can make a recommendation.

I can afford to spend a lot but i have set myself a $400. to $500. range or lower. I thought surround speakers would be better to hear someone coming up behind you, but if a 2.1 setup is just as good at audio positioning i will go for it. I have a good sound card, its listed in my sig. Also I will not be watching movies on my computer. I have a great system for that already.

If that is the case, then the Logitech Z-5500's are a great choice. A 5.1 speaker setup will handle audio positioning a lot better than a 2.1 or 2.0 system.

With that soundcard and Z5500 combo, you're gonna be gaming in 5.1 audio nirvana, have fun with it! I'd bought mine a while back and have always considered it to be one of my better impulse buys....

I went with these speakers because the computer room is small and well insulated http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836121006

Good choice with the X-540, I'd auditioned them a while back, I like it! But I was in a mood to spend more, so I went with the Z-5500. I did have the older sibling of the X-540, I gave it to my nephew, a set of Z-640, actually prefer this over the X-540.

Just got them yesterday and they sound great, the Z-5500`s would have been overkill for this room.

You take that back! No such thing as 'overkill' when we're talking computer parts/peripherals.
