    1) How do you make things? I know how to mine and place blocks. But I have no idea how to make new items like torches.

    2) Since I can't log in what are my restrictions... if they are really bad I'll wait till he gets his new server up and running before playing.
Right now you have no restrictions because the authentication servers are down. Once everything is back up and running I believe you'll only be able to play creative mode. You'll also be able to purchase the game.

It should, it is just java based. I would worst case download classic for free and see how it behaves.

Question guys, I found what looks like a blue cage with fire in it. I looked on the wiki but can't figure out what it is. I found it by a lake with green and gray cobblestones but it was turning night so I didn't hang out to see what it was or if I could harvest it.

Also what is the item after the shovel on my hotbar? I can't seem to do anything with it. It looks like meat, but I can't eat it unless my health isn't low enough. I found it in a chest by the cage.

That cage is a monster spawner! If left alone it will continually spawn creatures. You should have also seen a couple of chests nearby it, which is where I assume you found the saddle.

Put a bunch of torches around it. This will prevent monsters from spawning.

Once you build up your resources, you can make traps to farm the spawned monsters for resources.
If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

I think this would only be useful for skeletons since they drop arrows, otherwise just break the cage and be happy with your conquest!

Skeletons and Zombies now drop feathers. Spiders drop string and creepers drop gunpowder.
