I cleaned up the area around the front of the base and around the doors. As much as possible, I tried to make it so everything goes up or down only 1 block at a time (or has steps), so if you're being chased to the door, you don't have to worry about hitting a wall that you can't jump up or an edge that'll hurt to fall down.

I also put walkways on both sides of the water and some bridges across, so you don't get held up in the water flows, either.

I took the cavern that was underneath the floor (but accessible from the front, under the window) and added a door to it, so we have another decent sized room there now, too. I put a workbench and furnaces in there, too.

we need a suicide command to respawn in cases where we get stuck. ImpulseX had the issue a few min ago.

ALso, any one want to move the portal closer to the "base" so we can give it its own room. I was thinking that once we do that, we can work on setting up a transportation portal system. We can go to the nether, build a base out of stone, and then setup portals that are spaced out. This should create drop points that are much farther away in the terra world and thus expanding out travel ability greatly.

    Thoughts?

I'd be up to creating a portal room.

Is it possible to move the current portal? I'm not sure how all that world linkage is handled.

Portals work not exactly like you'd expect (if you are me, at least).

"Let's say on SMP you make a portal from the overworld into the Nether, which builds you a portal there automatically when you step through. Now let's say you go back to the overworld and walk 800 blocks away and build another portal. When you step through this portal, you'll be back to the same original portal in the Nether."

(from http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/co...lained_or_why/ which does a pretty good job of explaining how it works)

The good news is, this means we can just move the one we have now and it will probably continue going to the same place. The bad news is, creating a room full of portals to different places is way more complex than it sounds.

The reason why I set the portal away from the base is because the sound it makes can be ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING. I had one in my house in single player and it pissed me off.

That said, if you guys want it in the base, breaking it down and rebuilding it is entirely doable (remember to use diamond picks!) and the distance it'll be moved won't move the Nether-side portal at all.

Or we just keep expanding the base until the portal IS in the base.

Oh yeah I've run into that before. My idea is to have a single portal in our living area that takes us to the Nether. In the nether, we construct a series of spaced out portals. Every 1 nether steps is 8 Terra steps so I think something like every 30 nether paces we place a portal. This would allow us to fast travel around Terra since the area would be sprinkled with portals.

To make it safe, we may have to build a basic strong hold to reduce ghast attacks as we travel.

We could give it its own room located in another area of the base, or at least make it a little more accessible.

Personally, I rather just make a new one with water and lava and save the obsidian for the nether world transport portals

We found an abandoned mine this morning. It was AWESOME. Coal and iron ore as far as the eye could see, with some sprinklings of Redstone, gold and diamond for fun.

And monsters, lots and lots of monsters.

Myself and fuuian spend a good 30 minutes wandering around down there, found a cavern, then got lost and almost didn't make it back topside.

Definitely sweet. If you want to check it out, there is an entrance underneath my hermit shack to the northeast of the apartments. (Follow the cobblestone roads, or cut through where you see torchlight from the apt windows.)

It's the right idea, but I'm pretty sure if you build a nether portal 30 paces from the one you came in from, it'll just return you to the original overworld portal you came from (minecraft only generates a brand new portal in the case where it can't find an existing one to use). We'd need to do the nether-portal-room, and then also create the overworld portals that would link to them (meaning we'd have to walk out to wherever they'd be).

And then if someone created another portal (for example, 100 overworld paces in the same direction as the far one), the nether portal would likely start taking you to there instead of the far off place you expected to go.

At least, that is my understanding of how it all works.

(actually, I think a small portal room wouldn't really work at all, see below)

    Example:
    - create first overworld portal at 80,80...this would create a nether portal at approximately 10,10 (divide each by 8)
    - then create another nether portal at 40,10 (30 paces away)...going through that would put you at the closest overworld portal to 320,80 (multiply by 8) which is the still the original one from the step above
    - create a second overworld portal at 800,80...this portal would now go to the closest portal to nether 100,10 which is your second nether portal...so far so good, but...
    - however, the second nether portal would still go to the closest portal to 320,80 which is still the original overworld portal

Go to mines, 2nd branch on the right, up the stairs = loads of obsidian.

There's a natural obsidian-generating location in the mines below our base; it's where I originally got the material for the portal.

Minecraft was fun when it didn't pause for me every few seconds. Any ideas *** is going on?

It doesn't seem to matter when my graphics settings are.
    I'm running 64 bit Java.
    I disabled all anti-virus protection.
When it pauses (sometimes for 3-4 seconds) there is no cpu spike or excessive disk activity.
    ...WAIT FOR IT
