You gotta look at the games when deciding between consoles. Both have a lot of great exclusives. Xbox has Gears, Halo, etc, while PS3 has God of War, Demon/Dark Souls, LBP, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Killzone, and Uncharted. PS3 also has a blu ray player. They both have online game services, XBLA and PSN, both of which have a lot of great games and other stuff.
I have a PS3 and love it, so I am a bit biased that way. I feel it has better exclusives, plus I love the blu ray player. It's down to you to look at the list of games and decide which has the exclusives you'd rather play.

I have both and I prefer the PS3. That said, the 360 has a better online system but you have to pay for it.
If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

im not worried about a blu ray player, im more concerned about the console not dying on me. seems the older xbox 360s died a lot

What you gonna do?!?
If you buy a new 360 you don't have to worry about failures anymore than the PS3.
Basically just look at what games look better to you. I have both and both have strengths and weaknesses. The major ones imo are the PS3 has better exclusives but multi is much much better on 360. After that it comes to controller preference and then it is a wash past that.

Awesome.
I have both and I prefer the 360. The interface feels much more refined and XBox Live is noticeably better than PSN. Additionally, I personally prefer the XBox exclusives to the PS3 exclusives.

I would go with a PS3 if you don't have enough money for both. If you can't swing paying for two consoles, then you probably won't want to pay 10 dollars a month for a Gold membership which is needed for online games. Best case scenario is that you catch an Ebay gold card 12month deal for 40 bucks, but that is still almost a full retail game and a hassle to have to track down.
I do like the 360 controller more, but the PS3 offers more functionality. You say you don't care about the media capabilities, but neither did I when I bought my consoles. Now, I probably do 50% media 50% games on the systems. Once you get a taste...
In the end, it really depends on what games you want to play. Figure that out first and make sure you aren't going to be missing any titles you are dying to play.

i had both at some point (until my 360 RRoDed on me for the 3rd time)... it really comes down to which exclusives you want.
Also, to me PSN had an edge over Live in that it is a free service... $50/yr honestly is not much for Live but I hated that I felt like i had to play often to "get my moneys worth." with PSN i can not log on for 2 months at a time and not feel like im wasting money
both have pretty good media capabilities... i think i own 2 blu-ray discs... almost all my movies are via netflix which is available on both consoles

Uh, what?? Where are you pulling your numbers? $10/month works out to $120 for 12 months. Are we talking American dollars here, or pesos?
As for being a hassle to track down...

...even GameStop has it at $59.99 (which is the standard price) for a 12 month sub, which makes it $5 a month.
Where you're pulling $10/month is beyond me.

It's definitely something to consider when making a decision.

It's $60 per year if you set up an annual subscription through the console. It's the cost of one game to have a year of excellent online service; that is entirely fine for me, especially after experiencing PSN.

I voted 360. My PS3 plays blu rays, but that's about all it does. I try demos on it and I'll admit I would like to play the Uncharted series (I haven't yet) and I like the Rachet and Clanks, but for me that's about where the fun ends. I have Little Big Planet and the "cool factor" wore off after about 5 minutes. Same for Wipeout.
The problem, for me, is the controller on the PS3. Ever since games started emphasizing the use of the analog sticks I just can't get used to them. They are unnaturally placed making the rest of the buttons weird for me to reach. It's especially noticable in FPS games. Again, my opinion, but that's one thing that keeps me off the PS3. I will admit, I prefer the playstation controller for fighting games where the d-pad is used.
The 360 has exclusives that are just as enjoyable as those found on the PS3. Dark Souls is not a Sony exclusive, btw, as someone mentioned above. The cross-platform games are a mixed bag, but usually graphically, not necessarily from a sound or interface standpoint. Sometimes game A has better graphics on PS3; sometimes better graphics on 360. It's hit or miss, but neither system has "bad" graphics....unless it's just a badly produced game. Neither system have bad sound, neither have bad video quality.
The 360 controller, imo, is head and shoulders above Sony's offering. The control sticks are staggered for a more natural feeling. It's a little large and has some weight to it, so it doesn't feel as flimsy as the PS3 controller. The buttons and triggers are well designed and well placed. This is the single biggest advantage in my mind over the PS3.
The multiplayer experience on the 360 is top-notch. Live is made for interaction between friends and I have never once experienced an unplanned outage is the 4+ years I've used it. Yes, you have to pay for it, but finding a sale on a 12 month card does not take an act of congress. MSRP is $60, but they can be found fairly regularly for $50 and occasionally for $40 or less. Yes this amounts to the price of a game. However, it's "a" game...not 5 or 9 games. If cost is that much of a factor then don't buy that one game and wait til it hits $20 bucks or so. Problem solved.
I can't speak to the PS3's muliplayer that much. I did play Warhawk and GT5 online and it worked fine. Those are my only experiences online with PS3. I know they've added a "Plus" service or something like that, but that supposedly gets you "free" stuff even though there's a fee. This is something that makes me scratch my head, but whatever. Online works as it should.
Basically, as others said, which games do you want to play; Resistance, Killzone, Uncharted or Halo, Gears of War, and Fable? Since cross platform games are basically a wash, it comes down to interface, online, and games. So, which do you see yourself preferring?

TEAM AWESOME!
360. It's all I've ever had so I guess I'm biased. I purchased a standalone bluray player and that eliminated the need for the use of one through the PS3. I'm a Gears of War whore, Mass Effect addict, Call of Duty junkie, etc etc etc
I've had it RROD on me twice. But I've since purchased a newer model and its never given me any problems.

I did. It's $60/year through MS, too. Again, not sure where you're pulling $120, but when reputable, major retailers are offering it for less than $50 everyday, it just seems a little disingenuous to warn against $120/year sub fee when everywhere on earth is listing $60 as the standard.

Raaawwwrrrrr
its $10 a month if you pay it monthly instead of buying a whole year. i think thats what he meant. but thats not a very smart way to do it lol. just buy the year subscription for 50 bucks and be done with it.
I voted xbox360 as well but thats because its all i have. the reason i chose the 360 over the ps3 is mainly because all my friends have a xbox, not a ps3. i think i have a whopping 2 RL friends who own a ps3, they other 10 that game play on xbox. so that was a major deal for me right there.
