GeForce2 MX DDR Enough?
I have a 16Mb TNT2 M64 now on my old cpu. I was wondering if upgrading it to a GeForce 2MX DDR if I would see a large difference. I play my games anywhere from 1024x768 up to 1600x1200 in 16 bit color and I might use FSAA a little. I play mostly FPS games. My system is
P2-400@398
TNT2 M64
128MB 2 sticks of 64 PC-133 SDRAM
56 US ROBOICS Modem
2x DVD
32xCD
TBS Montego2 soun card.

Ya, you would see a big gain in performance. You have a measly 16MB of RAM and a chip that is crippled by a 64-bit memory bus.
Now, the MX cards using SDRAM have a 128-bit buses, and the DDR boards only have a 64-bit bus, but being DDR makes it basically the same as SDRAM on a 128-bit bus.

MX doesnt come with ddr ram........oh so MX memory actually has the same bandwidth of 64-bit DDR?

I know the M64 sucks. At least I think it an m64. I get great frames in UT at 1024x768 16 bit color high character detail medium world detail and min frames per second at 65 no decals and dynamic lightting on. I might even have a RIVA TNT. Ever since i got the detonator 3 it says i have that is said tnt2 before i got them.

YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY WITH A MX CARD. I USE CREATIVE WITH DDR. SOME SAY THE HERCULES IS BETTER...I TRIED ONE AND HAD SEVER LOCKUPS WITH OPEN GL GAMES. EITHER BRAND...ITS ALL PRETTY MUCH THE SAME GIVE OR TAKE A FEW FPS!
I ALSO WOULD STICK WITH A BRAND YOU KOW WILL BE AROUND IN A FEW YEARS LIKE CREATIVE! (GUILLEMONT--HERCULES--OR WHOEVER THEY ARE NOW)
-
Actually, the DDR MX is considerably slower than the Hercules. We're talking about 10 fps in most resolutions. That's huge. It's only the DDR MXs that have the 64 bit bus, the SDR MXs have 128. Also, the DDR chips are only clocked at like 2x143 or something at 64-bit...much slower than 183 on a 128 bit. Go for the Hercules...I love mine.

I beg to differ...if I overclock my creative I get about 10-15 more fps in Q3 and can tell no difference whatsoever in a game. 10 fps is not enough of a difference to spend 149 bucks on a mx. Save 30 dollars on the creative and buy a new game with the difference!

I hope you don't get me wrong...just because Hercules/Guillemont did not work for me does not mean it will not for you. There seem to be many happy people with Herc. mx's. I had 2 bad experiences with prophet se and a prophet2 mx. It was tough to find drivers for prophet se because guillemont and hercules were merging at the time (I guess thats why their web page was a mess. Be an informed consumer and read articles and be the judge for yourself..10 fps will make no difference in a game. If you can afford to do so I suggest buying both (herc and creative mx's) and see the difference in your machine and then take one back. Thats what I did. You will then be the authority on your machine and will know which card is better for you.
Good luck

I will get a creative and if it doesnot work well i can try the hercules the store has both.

No
CL is 142x2x64 instead of your standard Mx of 166x128. This makes the CL about 5% slower in general.

Good Luck with that Herc. With ramsinks you should be able to reach 210/210 on a nice OC.
