Good 3-Peice speaker set?

I don't want Four Point Surround Sound, but I am looking into a decent speaker set and Subwoofer...Right now I've got my eye on either the Altec Lansing ACS48 or ADA70...Anyone know much about them?

The ACS48s are pretty good, but a bit outdated. It all depends on how much you want to spend. The ACS48s can be found in the $100-$150 range.

If you want to keep the purchase below $100, I'd suggest the new Boston Acoustics BA790 Digital speakers or the Creative Soundworks Digital speakers. If you are looking for something cheaper, the BA635s are simply awesome for around $60.00.

If you're looking for high-end speakers, I'd suggest either the Boston Acoustics MediaTheater or Altec Lansing ADA885s, both for around $250.00. Although the ADA885s can be used as a 4.1 system, the rear satellites can be attached to the front satellites to make a 2.1 system.

If you want something in the $500+ range, I would recommend the VideoLogic Sirocco Pro speakers for $900 or the VideoLogic Sirocco Spirit speakers for $250.

The ADA70 speakers are USB speakers, and I have no faith in or much experience with USB speakers. Other Altec systems to think about are the ACS45.2, ACS295, and the ATP3.

It would be good to find a local CompUSA that allows you to test many speaker brands in the store. That would give you the chance to find the kind of sound you're looking for.

I'd go for the Altec Lansing ACS 46W 3 Piece Speakers. They look pretty nice, and for $45, the price is very right Email me if you want that deal.

I guess I should have mentioned my price-range, it is around $100-150.

ACS48 sound pretty damn good, I've heard them on a friend's comp... but then again I don't have anything to compare to, other than my SB PCI128 and $6 speakers..

I think I'll go for the ACS48s anyway - good enough for me

Hmm, well where can I read more about them? www.monsoon.com gets me nowhere...

There's really no way for me to compare speakers - stores don't have many on display, if any at all... So I guess the whole decision will pretty much be based on opinions

Them flat-panel speakers are really crap. For 3-piece speaker sets, go with one of Boston Acoustics. They probably make the best 3-piece sets. I really regret buying my crappy Cambridge Soundworks after hearing my friend's 3 piece set from BA.

My first set of computer speakers were the Boston Acoustics BA635s. Those little wonders NEVER ceased to amaze me! They are easily the best speakers around in the $50-$75 range. I was so impressed with Boston that I upgraded to the BA4800s last April or so. I briefly owned the Klipsch Pro-Medias, but I hated them so much I sent them back. The BA4800s offer more of what I want in a speaker system. Bostons simply rule, and I will be a customer for life!

The Klipsch Pro-Medias are aweful, IMO! Boomy bass, shrill high-range that causes listening fatigue, and absolutely no mid-range.

I don't know what the FPS2000 cost these days, but I imagine they would be the best 4.1 system around $150. If you can find the BA4800s for that price, they would be a steal. The BA790s are awesome for around $100. I have the feeling Altec Lansing has the most systems in the $100-$150 range, so I would look at as many systems from them as possible.

My BA4800s are great when it comes to gaming for games like Half-Life: Counter-Strike. They are best for classical and music with detail. The Pro-Medias with the the massive subwoofer are best for rap and dark (not trancy) techno that requires more bass than anything. The BA4800s offer great, but very tight (not boomy) bass.

I found the FPS2000 for $ 114 and the BA4800 for $159. I also saw the ACS56 for $99, so for melodic trance and gaming which would be the best option?

I'd try to listen to them all, then decide. If money is no object, the BA4800s easily have the best subwoofer of the three. The BA4800s are also able to go 95% of their volume and still be distortion free. I know for a fact that the subwoofers on both the ACS46s and FPS2000s more or less give out around 75% volume and the satellites around 80-85% volume. (They distort easily at those volumes.) I also know for a fact that the BA4800s will offer the most smooth, neutral mid-range of the three systems. For people who are use to a bright high-range, such a neutral mid-range can take some getting use to. If the BA4800s are too expensive, I would probably settle for the FPS2000s over the ACS56s.
