networking and cable modem

I just gor a cable modem hookup but now I want to hook up another computer to use it. I know you have to network the two computers.I do not want to spend a lot of money with expensive routers because the second computer isn"t used on the internet to often. I heard of two ways to network the two computers. 1. With a hub and connecting the two computers to the hub 2 putting two nics in main computer and with a crossover cable connect to other computers nic. I heard that the second way you must leave the main computer on a all tinmes. If I was to use a softwaare program like wingate would it work on a hub system where the main computer will be off. Which is the best and easiest way.

if u dont use a router than u have to have one comp on at all times to get a internet connection to both comp.
the cheepest way to go is to have a nic card in both of the comp use a crossover wire between the two comp. and get a proxy software of some kind. no need for a hub or switch in this setup unless u want to get one in case u plan on adding more computers.

Thanks for info. Would a software program like wingate or sygate work on two computers connected by a hub?

The cheapest way is to buy a crossover cable if you already have the software, but you need the server(CPU with internet access) on when you want to use the otehr computer. You can get 50' for $10 or 100' for $20 if you shop around. If you don't have anything yet you could get a switch, which is like a hub but a little better for about the same price and that way you could add more computers to your home network if needed(Plan for the future). ive never hear of wingate or sygate but ill tell u the one i used it was relativly easy to set up its call comsocks. u can d/l a tril version i think it lasts for like 90 days for free @ http://www.linkbyte.com/. it has a fire wall and all that acciting stuff.

IF you're using win98 or win2k, the easiest way is with ICS Internet Connection Sharing. It works better in win2k than it does in win98, but it will work. If you have win2K on your main computer already, just add another NIC to it, and then get a cheap 4 or 5 port hub, hook the 2nd NIC up to the hub, hook the other computer up to the hub as well and enable ICS on your NIC that you have connected to your cable modem. It works the same way in win98 also IIRC. Good luck.

I heard that Sygate's a very good internet sharing program, however, it is somewhat complex in installation (tried installing it). Have tried Wingate, found it to be somewhat limiting.

As to ICS in Windows, I think it's great as long as you don't try to host internet games....ICS will not allow you to do that!

With all internet sharing programs, if you want your second system to access the net, you will first have to turn on your "server" (one with the connection to the cable modem) and then the second one.

I am using Sygate 4 for internet sharing..
i recently upgraded from sygate 3.1
i find that 4 is very easy to setup..

its auto config as long as you set the internal and external ip right..

Reply: What are your settings Maybe I can find my problem by looking at yours and compare with mine. Because I cannot get ir to work even though my network between my two computers is working fine
