Post What should I do with VSYNC?

Should I have it "on by default" or "off by default" or let the program choose? I think those are my 3 choices, but I would like to know what the benefits of having it on or off add to gaming.

On by default is my choice. The only reason you want it off is for benchmarking. What that option does, is locks your maximum frame rate to the vertical refresh of your monitor. Framerate higher than the vertical refresh of your monitor cannot be seen, because the screen is not being redrawn that fast. For example, if your monitor is set to 75 Hz refresh, then it is being redrawn 75 times per second, and thus, perceived framerate will never be beyond this. Having VSynch off can cause visual artifacting because the frame buffers can be swapped in the middle of a screen redraw, and if the two images are offset enough, it can be seen as a "tearing" in the image.
