Building a Better Backbone - We can DO it
. . . That users like you and me can actually take full advantage of.
What do you guys say, can it be done? Can we team up, and build a better backbone? By better, of course, I mean more accessible. If it is possible to construct a network that reaches enough major cities, we will be allowed, free of charge, to utilize the 5 major backbones currently in existence. This, of course, means that we have to comply with the "hot potato" data passing rules of the major players. We pass data to them right away, and they pass data to us right away.
Here's how it will work. We'll link 10Gbps fiber from city to city around the world, and we'll have nasty net access. We'll be our own ISP, rather than outsourcing, and we'll charge from $10 to %30 bucks a month. Access will be totally unlimited, but it will be segmented, so that 1 person does not kill all of the bandwidth with a 10 hour bandwidth test. That'd just be wrong.
We could serve up 10Mbit as the $10, 100 Mbit as the $20, and 1Gbit as the $30. Hosting and backup options would be more, but then again, no one will need hosting options. No Verizon s***, selling the bandwidth, and blocking port 80 to requests . . . All open internet.
Whadda you guys think? Non-profit organization? Could it fly? I think so.
Just remember, this is MY idea. I said it here first.
Peace,
Chris

Your first problem with this idea is... Up front Cash. Ever tried to lay fiber across an ocean? well, it aint cheap. You have to buy the ships... then the sailors that float the ships... and then all the beer that the sailors drink(that floats the sailors)... That gets expensive my friend. Other than that, It just might work.

The key is . . . Spiffs.
I'm sure that everyone in "tech savvy" neighborhoods wouldn't mind paying a little "up front" to be on top of the tech bandwagon. (i.e. http://www.acc.umu.se/~tfytbk/mattgrand/ )
Now, across the ocean? Not there yet. That will come when people see the potential. The key is to get across cities. Once that task is conquered, oceans will be nothing.
We need to give companies inscentive to support the network, like allowing them to use free fiber. Advertising is out of the question, however. No ads allowed
Just give them 3 strands, and tell them that all they have to do is to buy the fiber, and voila, we're in business laying fiber across cities ourselves. Believe me, companies like NUCLEAR POWER COMPANIES have the money for this, and have pleanty of reason to use it too. Those guys lost $1.5 million a day during downtime, and it's fine by them. If they are networked, they don't have to pay for most of the people who are currently on site to be on site, because video conferencing on a private fiber is now possible.
So, there. We don't need to float the sailors. Bill Gates will do that on his own.

Dang man... Nice idea. One prob is that you have to get a ton of ppl listening to you. Shoot, as long as you got some room for future ppl working on it for free access im in. Id love to help you get it started. As soon as i get a job, what the heck. You got any web page building experience?. I dont have much but i could throw together a page very fast (wont be the best) and hopefully get 1-3 more ppl on it.
i just know html
but a friend knows html and dhtml
and 2 more know stuff a cant begin to grasp.
1 will probly make a logo if he gets some free service. Try to get some of the genetic sharks and mods here on your side and you have a nice revolution whether it works or not...

i think we should also put suggestions for names in this thread.
the reason things like this dont happen is because people think it is all just hype and dont invest. they think oh it wont work its too good to be true.
The truth is that if people stop thinking that it cant happen and start helping it happing and supporting it then it WILL happen. People just arent willing to take enough risks. You got my contact info if u wanna help give one of us an email (he downpour list your contact info) well need software and maybe smaller networks to test the software on and debug. then we start shipping it out to the people on the team and we showcase our software and our plan around the country. then we wait for the cable to be laid and we use our software to connect to each other and go through the final testing stages.
D*mn that sounded east...
but its not
contact info on last post im too lazy to type it again

I doubt if this kind of startup could raise enough money to purchase the right to bury 10 miles of cable let alone do it. You'd be better off leasing dark pairs because there is an excess of fiber throughout the US. Then there is the little matter of the electronics required at each node at a cost of several million US$.
The venture capital market is all but dry!

Negatives
The problem with being negative is that people will never get started. It can start very easily with someone who knows how to construct server-side networks, set up a payment routine, and be able to get people automatically signed up.
The key is that it would not start with massive amounts of expensive switching technology. Fiber hubs, on the small scale, aren't prohibitively expensive.

Drop me a line if you are serious about this project.
We also need a group leader.
I am going to college in a few months, so I cannot hold that position for more than those few months.
Peace,
Chris
