looking for newbie faq help
Hey SE fellas--
I have been reading the Sharky forums for several months now, but this is my first post. It has been so much fun reading everyone's posts, and all of the great advice that you guys have. As you can see from my sig below, I am in terrible need of a new computer, and I really want to build my own. I think what has held me back is some of the really 'newb' kind of things, such as fitting the proc. into the motherboard, using thermal paste with the heatsink, and worrying about static...would you guys please give me some links to the 'basics' of building a computer? Man, I'm so excited about this. The funny thing is that new stuff is coming out so fast that I'm caught in that vicious cycle of always waiting for best thing I've just read about...
Anyway, my system would be used primarily for gaming and video capture/editing.
I'd love to wait for the hammer to come out, but I don't know if I can wait that long
Any help you can think of for 1st time builders will be greatly appreciated
thanks guys!!

Could anyone build a computer at somewhat of an ease? How long would it take?

This is exactly how I feel - My wife would kill me if I bought all of the parts and then fried something because I didn't know what I was doing. Anyway, I can already tell this is going to be a great hobby. I know that I will be interested in overclocking, so I want to make sure I read up as much as I can. Thanks for the replies fellas!

Can I get a decent computer for $300? I mean, like a fairly good gaming computer. I will try to build it myself. If I cant build it myself I will either go to these forums and ask or go to my friends house and build it there....

30 Minutes?
Thank you sir. May I have another?

30 minutes?? It took me at least an hour to set it all up. But it is a nice hobby (an expensive one, maybe should've gone into stamp collecting ). The new pc's aren't hard to build up I mean 95% of it is plug and play, even the mobo is kinda plug & play. And you can hardly fry anything anymore, what happened to the days when you had to set your voltages on the system. I'm glad all of that is gone though.

For your first build it make take a little longer than an hour, but dont be worried. After you do it a few times, it gets easier and easier. After awhile it will take you only 30 minutes or so for the Hardware part, but the part that usually takes ahwile is setting up all your software and such. And one thing you have to keep in mind, dont be afraid to mess things up, yes being careful is one thing, but being reluctant to puch hard on certain things like RAM is not gonna get you anywhere. I guess just dont be afraid, and if it breaks just send it back and say it came like that. No seriously, i was nervous for my first build as well, but honestly it is not that big of a deal at all. Have fun with it. After you finish, and hopefully you were successful, you will feel great. You wont want anyone to ever touch your computer trust me. You will feel a true sense of accomplishment. Good luck
