Wireless Serial Port?
I'm on my unniversity's Formula SAE car team and we're really kicking up the ante for next years car (we've finished second twice in the past three years so we want to win it all next year).
This year (the 2004 car) we're using a derivative of last year's engine management system along with a new microprocessor based traction control (and the corresponding wheel speed sensors and accelerometers). The thing is that we've designed the majority of the system ourselves and we connect to the onboard telemetry via a serial cable. We also use the serial cable to program the microprocessors on board.
The problem with this is that the only way to gather alot of data (other then the limited onboard memory) is to have a laptop, and this is impractical for a couple of reasons; first we obviously can't get real time data unless we're tethered to the car and thats impossible because its faster than nearly any street car (to highway speeds anyway) and second we can't have a laptop onboard during a race. We would like to have a wireless connection to get the data in real time and to be able to change parameters (timing, etc.) from the pits. For this we need a wireless serial port. Are there any devices for this? One end is the car's ECU and the other is the base laptop so only one is a full PC. As for range, the longer the better, but we can step up the power if need be for the antenna. Any ideas for a wireless serial port?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Something like this perhaps? http://www.datahunter.com/serialan.html
