Wireless network & Folder Sharing
Well i've come upon a problem with a network in my house that has run flawlessly ever since I left for college. Let me give you the setup: We have a broadband internet connection (a cable modem) which plugs into a wireless hub. My dad's computer is hardwired (not a wireless connection) into the hub, and so is mine. However, my two brothers upstairs, one using a laptop and the other an eMac, have wireless NICs that receive the broadcast signal from the hub. Everything worked fine and dandy until the day I decided to mess things up
I was getting tired of opening Instant Messenger on my computer and my dads so I could send myself music files from my computer to my dad's so that I could burn them onto a CD using the burner on my dad's cd. Then I remembered that Windows XP has that nice folder sharing ability. I had already configured 'My Shared Folder' at a friends house during a LAN, so I figured I knew what I was doing and could just set it up on my dad's. So, I opened that little wizard thats gets thing ready for printer/file sharing. The first thing it asks is how are the computers connected to the internet. There were many options to choose from. I selected (and this is being set up on my dad's computer) 'other computers on the network go through this computer to get to the internet' [I know now that was wrong - I should have picked all computers connect through a device, aka the hub]. After changing his network name to WORKGROUP (as mine), I restarted and was able to see his computer on my workgroup computers. However, I was not allowed to put files into his folder. Now here is the part I'm confused about. My dad told me my brothers had lost their internet connections even after restarts. Then my dad was no longer able to connect to the internet from his computer. I was the only one that could for some reason. So, he used Windows Restore and placed his computer back 3 days. Before restarting, it told him his network name would change from WORKGROUP to OEMGROUP or something like that but it had originally started out as MSHOME? Anyway, he restarted from the restore and he had internet finally. But now my brothers still are unable to connect to the internet after restarts. What the hell is wrong? Sorry for the long post but I wanted to be as specific as I could. Any help greatly appreciated.
