The Helio display works by projecting light on a thin stream of particles that is able to stream full motion video mid-air with no physical screen. With the current box, the maximum display height is 27", but IO2 Technology plans on allowing users to expand to 150" in future releases.

Helio displays use standard projection hardware that's already compatible with any source, so this means right away we are able to integrate this into home theaters, computer setups, etc. Imagine playing Doom 3 on their upcoming 150" display .

IO2's device is also able to optically detect foriegn objects and where they enter and leave the display field. This means that Helio Display is both an input and output device, able to fucntion as a video display and an interactive touch screen. This can be especially useful for projects that require collaborateive efforts, interactive advertisements, and virtual reality games.

Despite over-enthusiastic claims from other sources, the image produced by the Helio Display is not truly 3-dimensional. The device is only sending a thin beam of particles, and the image produced is the same on one side of the device as it is on the other. Other limitations include high sensitivity to wind and, currently, lower image quality than is available on CRT displays. However, the ability to project interactive images into mid-air is a potentially significant advance for people in any market, from military to medical to home entertainment.
