They do make a 24" widescreen trinitron still, the GDM-FW900 and its still like 2k$. So I mean a 24" 4:3 w/ the same tube (more likely better) would be even more money.
And even with the best HDTV you can get the highest 4:3 resolution you can display will be like 1280x1080i. All of the true HDTV signals like 1080i and 720p are all widescreen. If you have a 4:3 TV that can handle those and you give it one of those resolutions it will force it to widescreen. Not to mention the Tubes that can take those resolutions and display then natively are usually quite large, like 30"s or larger
