I heard you can co-op the whole Fear 3 campaign - is that true?

Also, I haven't played Fear 1 or 2... will I miss out on a ton of back-story? Is 3 a decent stand-alone game?

Yes you can and the co-op is crazy.

The story is important and both 1 (and its xpacs) and 2 are good games in their own right.
