GO BENGALS!!!!!
It's a common problem if you upgraded from Windows 98 and didn't do a new installation. I think the only way to fix this is format your hard drive and do a clean install of Windows XP.

bah, ok, I wasn't very clear when I wrote that message. sorry. when I said that I upgraded to WinXP, I meant that I upgraded by reformatting . I never do anything other than a clean install, and I called it a upgrade .
the only thing that I'm running in the background now is Internet Explorer.. but I remember that in Win98 I could run about a 100 programs and it still wouldn't skip.. I didn't try uninstalling anything, because I just installed WinXP last night.. so it's about as fresh as it can be. I downloaded the newest sound drivers too but it's still skipping..

open the taks manager and look at the performance and processes. See if you can see what is going on when your music skips. I bet it isnt getting enough cpu time to keep the music from skipping.

I don't think it can be lack of cpu cycles with a Athlon 1.4 with only IE in the background! What version of winamp are you using? Because the 'beta 3.0' sucks big time go back to 2.80 if you have installed the Beta. Does music skip if you play it with Windows Media Player?

I had the same problem after a fresh install. I believe I fixed it by uninstalling winamp, reinstalling the newest sound drivers, and then reinstalling winamp. Good luck.

yeah I'm not stupid enough to whine about skipping if I used a beta version. I'm using v2.80.
I tried the uninstalling winamp and reinstalling sound drivers thingy. it didn't solve it.
I didn't see anything under performance in the task manager. Well, kind of.. the only thing that I thought was weird is that the cpu usage spiked to about 14% every ~7 seconds. The music skipping doesn't synchronize with those spikes though.
The music doesn't seem to skip with Windows Media Player but I want to use Winamp. WMP has butt-ugly skins and just doesn't do the job in my opinion.
any other ideas?
thanks

Try changing the output plugin for winamp. Go to the winamp preferences menu and you can change it there.
