Wink P3 700mhz overclockers, please post your findings.

Don't laugh, I know I should save up and go big but impulse buying is in!! And I'm broke so $87 on a p3 700mhz doesn't look too bad for me.

my current rig has a p3 500mhz running at 700mhz.

I want the p3 700mhz to run at the 133mhz fsb to get me 933mhz.
What I ask of you is whether or not any of you have done this and got it running stable? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had an 866 get to 975. Once you get that high the chip just doesnt want to go much higher. I think that is what my probalem was. Either that or my BX (rated for 100mhz) board couldnt handle the 150 fsb. I never figured out what the problem was since what was a long time ago and i wasnt that experienced. I kinda just figured it was the cpu since it was a slot 1 it didnt have great cooling and 1ghz is about as far as they went back then.

I had my p3-700 at 933 easily just had to increase the voltage by .05V
and that was a cB0 stepping long time ago.
    boo! bah!

Same here except no added volts. Ran perfect at 933 but not 1 more mhz That was with very old noname pc100 (must have been really lucky with that stick )

I once had a P3 700 it was cC0 stepping and I was able to get it to 1.1Ghz on a 157FSB on an Abit BX133. Most 700 will do 933 as always there are no guarantees

I had a p3 700e on an Aopen-bx board and would only get to 900mhz 129fsb stable. It was a cB0 cpu. I think I would have gotten >900 if I had voltage settings available in the bios.

TOTAL newbie here... but... how do i overclock?

I've never overclocked anything before... so i'll probably need all the details... I'm running a 700e with an abit motherboard... i tried to clock my cpu to 933 *after reading this post* by going into the cpu soft menu and changing the thing to "user define" and then changing it to 133x7... but when i rebooted nothign showed up on teh screen but my cpu fan and everything was still working... and after a few extra boots, i had to reconfigure again... so obviously it didn't work... i tried increasing teh voltage too... but still... nothing... do i have to wait? or did i miss a step? Anyways... thanks in advance for any replies...

    Are you using PC133 memory?

It could be the problem...if you're using a P3 700, it's quite possible your system is using PC100 memory. If you try to overclock your bus to 133, 9 times out of 10 the brand of PC100 you have probably won't hit 133. If that's the case, getting some PC133 might let you hit that 933 mark. It's also possible that even though you have a P3 700, it may just not be capable of hitting 933. You might have too early a stepping, or it might be that good cB0 stepping, but still won't hit 933. Heat could be also another problem. If your case isn't well ventilated and/or has really bad airflow (bad fan positioning, among other things) then that could also cause it not to boot at 933. There's a number of things that could be the problem, but I'd check those three things first. Also, you might need to boost the CPU voltage slightly to get it to hit 933. If your BIOS allows you to change the voltage of the processor core, and you're willing to try it, I'd push it up by each increment until the system boots and Windows runs and your programs run without fault.

Another problem that didn't occur to me at first is that the AGP bus speed might be too high for the card, or the PCI bus speed may be too high for other peripherals. Sometimes PCI network cards won't work with the higher speeds. Usually those are the common culprit; most other peripherals usually don't complain too much. If your graphics card is a decent nVidia based model, or maybe even a newer ATI card, then the AGP bus speed may not be a problem either. (not sure about ATI, haven't used one)

In any case, there's a number of things that could be the problem, but I'd first check the ram type and the core voltage, I think.

Edit: Sorry, that was probably a little deep. I just reread that you haven't overclocked before. If you want, it'd probably be better to read around a bit and gain some "book smarts" on overclocking before you really try to dive into it. You can find a lot on these forums, and there are even people who will probably be willing explain stuff simply enough for a new overclocker to understand easily.

when i upgraded from a p3-450 to an 866 it was unstable for some reason, i coun't play game or do anything else all i could do is search the net or type i couldn't do anything else so i went back were i got the 866 and bought a new motherboard and upgraded from 866 to the 1000 and stable, but that was sad bein at stock speeds and not being able to boot up all the time and crash out of every game, they told me it was my mobo so they gave me a free mobo and i payed an extra 70$ for the 1000
