I am allways out of RAM when i play games !

Hi , i hawe Epox 8K7A ,XP 1900 , 256 Crucial DDR ,Win 98SE and when i play MOHAA , IL2 , etc system will allways crash after 30 minn , 1 hour because i am out of Ram .
I use Mem TurboII for managing memory , Virtual memory in Windows is set to Min/Max200 , HD set as "network server".
I never had such problems in my old P III Rig 1GHZ SDR with 256 Ram , i had allways 40-60 mb free when i was out of a game , now is allways 1 mb free after game is closed .
Also look like the system eat 3 times more Ram in programs or apps. than with my old P III setup.
In background i use Norton AV 2002 Pro , Mem TurboII and ZoneAlarm 3 Pro , that's all but if i close Norton AV i am still out of Ram .

    (P.S not a heat issue or PSU , Full load temps mobo 25 , CPU 41/Celsius , Antec PP412X 400W psu solid 5.5V /12/3.3V , Videocard fan work , 100 CFM air circulation in Antec SX1040B)

Thx for your time spended and help .

Hmm I can only think of 1 thing go with another OS
which handles memory better like Win2k or Win XP.

Well yes XP Pro or 2000 would help but so would 256MB more of RAM. Games are creeping up to needing 256MB on their own while windows takes a bit itself to run.

    Hey

Are you sure your running out of memory? Maybe your system is just over heating. Playing video games heats up your comp quite a bit and if you dont got the proper cooling then your screwed. Also it is better to let windows manage the memory (from what i've read).

i suggest a better os like win2k or winxp because i had the same problem with playing games @ 512mb of ram on windows 98SE. Once i switched to winxp, everything about lack of memory went away.

always had that problem with 98... kept buying more and more memory and winblowz kept eating it- pac man style.

Switched to Win2k and no mem problems ever. period. 2k & XP are very stable... I prefer 2k though spend the extra $ or just bootleg it. either way you'll thank yourself.

This is an easy one. The only way to run out of ram with windows is if you set a fixed maximum size for your swap file. People say you should set a fixed max so it won't get fragmented, but the fixed minimum part will never get fragmented anyway. Get rid of that fixed max and you'll be fine. You may also want to set your minimu a little higher - it seems like you need more to start with. Also, keep a memory manager open for a while to monitor physical and virtual memory usage. Its interesting to watch.

    classic case

    Upgrade to better OS.

Win 98 has always had the reputation of being bad with mem managment when left by itself. ONce you start giving it parameters to work inside you find yourself in a deeper pile.

I have 256MB RAM running on Win2k and Medal of Honor never crashed on me because of a lack of memory. However when I exit the game tinhgs do get a little sluggish for about 10-20 seconds, nothing major.

I remember a post further up that said to let Windows manage your memory because it does it better. It actually doesn't manage your virtual memory very well. tweak3d.net has some good tweak articles (I think one about virtual memory) and PC Gamer also ran a tweak article that talked about changing the VM settings that is really good (it's the issue with Max Payne on the front cover... if you don't subscribe find a friend who does.. the issue isn't too terribly old so they should still have it). If need be, send me an e-mail at [email protected] and I can help you out with editing it.
