    CS Server feeling the Strain.

I like to run my spare pc as a CS server with some bots on it to practice against. I usally run 19 Bots and myself off it. Today i stepped it up to a 32player game and my puter started to lag.

The specs of my server are :
    Duron 1000 @ 1400 (175x8)
    Epox 8K7A+
    256mb Corsair PC2400
    40gb Segate Bara IV
    Win2k Pro / WinXP Pro
    Intel PRO 10/100 Server

Would another 512mb of Ram be the best upgrade for this box or another HDD for a raid 0 setup ?

    Thanks

dfi lanparty (1.375v fixed ram issues)

    74gb raptor
    160gb wd
    lianli case

Hi FaTs, I sent out a call to the CS Server gurus ( I only know how to play ) And they should be here later to help you out

duh, i'm stupid. i didn't notice that it's a bot-only server. definitely go for more RAM if that's what's holding you back (see below)

If you're comfortable using Linux, I would definitely go for setting up the linux port of HLDS. the few times I play CS now I only play on Linux servers, so that alone should get you some more traffic. also, the better HLDS/CS management tools are usually linux-only, and using Linux lets you use encryption for your adminmod passwords.

the thing is, Linux is only useful if you're doing an internet server; for a bots-only match linux isn't really worth the extra effort.

i don't know what connection you're using, but cable/DSL/etc connections tend to handle only so many concurrent connections well; anything more than 16-some players will need a T1 or better connection (not for the throughput but for the ability to handle more connections at once); you can also try lowering the maxrate on the server, and setting things like CS/HLguard to do less frequent scans of your clients.

It'll be easier to determine if more RAM can help if you monitor the task manager while your server is at near or full load; my server started lagging when it had to page out stuff to the pagefile. Also, try to keep it a dedicated server; doing other things (like serving stuff on AIM, opening Internet Exploder windows, etc etc) will lag the game if the HD has to be accessed. Keeping that many bots active probably puts quite a load on your system, RAM and CPU utilization-wise.

Also, I'd say to use the -heapsize command-line option to set aside maybe 160-192mb of dedicated system RAM to the server. the extra HDD in RAID0 will only help if you keep comprehensive logs/stats (as those are constantly updated), and in level loads.

    Thank You Wurm

    Real Bot

Theres a small glitch that you'll have to fix once it's installed, there is a file called Activate in the realbot directory. You will need to open it up (it's just written is Basic) and it contians the word delete in it, you will need to change that to del.
