why are you trying to format in the first place? You'll have to install 95 and then add install the upgrades. Get a 98 start up disk and you'll be able to format.

The cds that came with the dell and the gateway should give you the option to format. Since you'll need WinMe or Win95 to install XP you'll have to use one of the cd's first. Put it on your cd-rom drive and restart the computer.

you can always try a low level format ... or go to the microsoft website and then download the 6 floppy disk install that will allow u to install win xp even if your cd rom doesn't support a boot from it...u can insert the floppy disks and u can format and install win xp from there...

You should be able to install straight from the XP upgrade CD, it will ask you to insert a Win 98/Me/2000 CD to be sure you own one. But apart from that it is a normal install CD.

Why do you want to format? Do you want to eliminate all but one OS? How many partitions do you have on your drive?
