It doesn't. When Intel releases the NW Cely's with the castrated cache, are you going to stand by "upped the transitor count from around 42 million to 55 million which helped performance even more."
The current Willy Cely has 42 million transistors. The NW Cely is going to have 55 million transistors. If the NW Cely 2.0 has 256k cache and 100MHz FSB, which is going to perform better, the P4 Willy at 2GHz or the NW cely at 2GHz? If the NW Cely has 128k cache, then it will have more transistors than the Wily and yet perform worse.
Transistor counts are pretty much irrelevant when regarding performance.

These NW cellys will be quite a bargain especially with the ocs these things will probably be getting. As someone said, you can't argue with a 1ghz oc out of a chip that cost less than $100.

But the price doesn't justify it to me.
Sorry as much as I'm a die hard intel user.. that's how die hard I am about celerons.. I dislike Pentiums with a passion because Intel always overcharges for 1337 stuff that doesn't make that much of a difference.
And I've compared celeron systems w/ SDR to P4 Rambus system. The benchmarks gave a whole lot of difference but in RL gaming.. I couldn't notice it. Basically if you can afford a pentium.. by all means go with it. If you can't.. go with a Celeron or an AMD since they will do the job *just fine* IMHO. I choose to like celerons because of the ungodly overclocks I get out of them. And an overclocked celeron is better than stock p4's at a higher price like you said. That's how I tend to think.. 50% overclock for under a $100. Can you say NO? I don't think so..

hmm
my celery 933mhz i had before i went to the Dark side would only overclock to 1100.. not really a goldy overclock but it wouldnt fire up past that 1100.

The starting clock speed was to high to get a godly OC. To get those godly OC's you pretty much have to get the one of the lowest clocked CPU's. Like Coppermine Cely's in the 600MHz range and Tualeron's at 1GHz. I'm pretty sure Intel didn't release a 933MHz Celeron.

Yep you're right there BMG, there was no Celeron 933.
Also yes I've been lucky in my CPU choices. Celeron 300A. Celeron 600, Celeron 800. All can do a 50% overclock but I like an idiot bought an Intel motherboard.. oh well time to get rid of it soon as soon as Northwood Celerons are out.
The Tualatins were good as well btw so I'm expecting high things from the NCelery.

what!
yea it was either a 900 MHZ celeron or a 933.. why would i lie? .. you guys need to check further because there IS one nd i got it straight from new egg, as well as the 733 i had before it.

Uhh I'm not saying you're lying.. Its possible to get it confused.. I know I have.
Although I think the celerons have been on 100 FSB for a while now.
The P3's are on 133 FSB so that would make 733 and 933 possible.

celerons......
were 66 Bus up to 766.
They then went to 100 Bus, starting with the 800. Then they went 850, 900, 950 then i lost interest....sorry. I am not sure if there were any pre-tualatin Celeron 1000s or if they were all Tualeron from 1000 upwards. The 1400 seems to be the last of the Tualerons - the 1.7s are now listed and as we know they are Willy-P4 based.

oh Indus - i am not saying you are wrong but.....i have built a fair few machines, Celeron and Pentium 3 and while i think a Celeron can be just as snappy in Windows and the 'net and Office and such when you get to high-end gaming they come up short against the clock-for-clock Pentium 3.

Yep my celeron 300A's are Slot 1 (66 fsb). The Celeron 800 is a socket 370 (100FSB). I'm pretty sure there were some slot 1 Celerons that went upto 600mhz or higher.

just had a thought......
if the Tualatin Celerons are generally known to us as Tualerons...
On this day of 24th June 2002 at 17.32 GMT may i be the first to use:
Willeron
and
Northeron
as the nicknames for these new procs-to-be?
They have been named and as such and shall pass into history as appellated!
